    Hi

Please excuse my newbie-ness. I have read articles on this site but i would like opinions of those in the know who have used many of the progs suggested.

I am very new to all this, just wondering what is the best tool for me.

I would like to rip dvds to my hard drive at this stage, just to view , (and burn to vcd later on but not yet), i know there are various programs that can do this but i am wondering what is the best way/program to store them on the hard drive. Currently they are fob files (smartripper), does avi use less hard drive space and is this better, also what tools ? What is the best tool that rips to hard drive then (if required) converts and burns to vcd (FOR A NEWBIE)

    ANY HELP MUCH APPRECIATED!!!!!

Read the how to guides to the left. You'll find extensive guides to answer and solve all your questions. Learning to do the things you want to do will require you to do your homework and read. Then if you get hung up. Post with what problem you are having, but to try and rehash all the wonderful guides to the left would be an injustice to those who have already done the work for you.

I agree with jdizzy...try to use the guides as a tool first then come to the forums. Thats what I did and now I back up all my movies without any problems. But I'll try to answer your question anyway...here goes. To make a vcd, here's what I use:

    1) Smartripper(to get the vob files)
    2) DVD2AVI(to extract the wav and the d2v)
    3) Tmpgenc(to encode)
    4) Nero(to author)

That solves your tools question. As for the avi question...yes, it does use less hard drive space, but to make a vcd, it needs to be in the mpg1 format. So, I would recommend going straight from vob's to mpg(unless you are short on hard drive space).

Here are the guides that I found really useful:

    https://www.videohelp.com/sefy/?id=ClassicalGuide.html

    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/84759.php

The first one helped me do it all...while the second one taught me how to fit it all on one cd(it saves money...but for your first few movies, I dont recommend using one cd. I suggest you get the hang of the programs first and then experiment). Hope this helps. Good luck

    Thankyou for your advise.

I really have tried the guides but i seem to be going around in circles. I will try the linked guides provided, thanks.

I have used smartripper , Nero and tmpge so now i will try dvd2avi in between to convert.

    Thanks again

    Here's hoping............................................ ......

    Had some sucess last night
    Vob's went on fine.
    Converted with dvd2avi fine.
Had trouble with Tmpge accepting the dv2 files but then i used the force film option in dvd2avi which worked.
The only problem is that i couldn't test svcd to see how it came out. I could play vcd fine in various players but not svcd. Also whatever aspect ratio i chose the video looked the same., oh and when playing a ripped dvd it will stop at the end of each vob instead of playing the whole movie but i'll try and read up on the guides how to get it to play all the vobs(the whole movie).

    Getting there slowly.........................................
