Just finished building my own about a week ago. Totally custom. I posted pics in the "Who has the coolest looking computer" topic in the computer forum.

  4. I've been custom ever since my 486 DX33 (maybe 10 or 11 years now) The 386 my parents had before that was a clone, but it was built by some no name place.

Never bought a Brand name PC. This is the 3rd that I've owned and I built it.
It's not that fast by todays standards, but it gets the job done nicely.

I build my own. Closest I get to a manufactured PC is the SS50 and Via ITX machines I have. Mostly those both have everything you need except memory and drives. So I guess that counts as custom.

How does one customize an e-machine?

In the field of video editing you would be doing yourself a favour by custom building your own machines.

Mine is old but still performs .No IRQ issues , no BSOD but it is slow on encodes. Big deal ,i just set it up and go to bed. My online machine : 1Ghz T-Bird, 384Mb RAM, 4 + 20Gb drives, WIn98SE is more than up to the task of every thing else. Except for the latests games - but that dosen't intrest me. Playstation/X-box for that.

Please please if you are serious about video editing - custom build

Majority of computer problems are software based : ie: WinDoze .It just dosen't make sense to buy a name brand, when all their customer support will tell you is : ..... reboot , reinstall, put restore disk in, install latest drivers, send it in........ thanks for the help (dripping scarsam)

Not to start a fight here with the dell owners --- but a lot of people (friends/work associates) that come to me with the most stupid little computer issues ............. own Dells. Go figure . I won't touch them - too proprietary . Custom motherboards that won't fit other cases - ick .

My first PC in the day was a Packard Bell (ewww) since I actually learned anything about them I've just done customs. Its just not worth saving a few dollars to get unknown parts. For example: What chipset does that dell use on the system board? You never know.... same with most the other OEMS.

only name-brand computers in my house are some surplus Compaqs that I've modified, my main boxes are home-built custom jobs.

Two my computers are totally customized, they are both Pentium 4 and a combined HD capacity of 180 GB.

I also got one Compaq computer; only the OS is changed due insufficient memory to handle WinXP. The CPU is Celeron 1.1 GHz and the Ram increased to 256 MB. I am using this one mainly for the Internet.

I still got an old IBM computer and this one as the original Windows 98. This is mainly used for the Internet and some basic programs such as Microsoft Office.

This Win98 computer is now much better now since re-formatted earlier this year. I don’t expect to have this computer much longer as too old and should be gone by March 2004. Some program will expire by then and this is the end.

I am aiming for a new computer by then, probably Pentium 4 at 3.0 GHz with 512 MB of RAM. A DVD burner is a must very soon as well.

Custom is the ONLY way to go.

    Have a Athlon 1700+ running @ 2012Mhz. XP Pro.

Three other PIII600 and higher machines. Two laptops and a test system I'm currently testing Unix on.

  24. HP 780n with 200i (did have 100i before the upgrade program)
Have also added a second 120Gig hard drive.
Didn't have the time or interest in doing a custom at the time.
However, the next one will be all custom and it will be a screamer!
Just what is this reality thing anyway?
