Philips DVR615 Must have Video Source to Record?

Any assistance would be appreciated. Am I correct to assume that the Philips DVR615 must have a video source to record? When I plug in just the audio cables to record from Jazz Radio Station, I get a "No Signal" and cannot record. But when I plug in a video source, I can then record the audio from the Jazz Radio Station. Is this normal?

My old Philips 985 is the same. I'm pretty sure this is the same for all Philips models....and the majority of other makes as well unless they advertise the fact that they record to CD-R's.
