Anyone ever have problems mpeg-2 encoding on Premier. I've got some videos that I'm trying to encode to mpeg-2 but Premier always crashes and shuts down, never in the same spot of the video either. I can go on and on about my setup, but I'll just give you the basics.
2.4 GHz Intel
512 RAM
XP Pro
Premier crashes, not the computer. CPU and RAM usage are at acceptable levels until Premier crashes. Plenty of HD space. I can even encode very short videos with no problem. Seems like the longer the video, the more problems. Oh yea...This also happens when encoding to mpeg-1, VCD, and even when taking the timeline and trying to go straight to AVI. My reasons for going to AVI are that I wanted to give TPMGEnc a shot. Any clues??

I would guess you have one too many codecs installed and it is coflicting with Premiere. I once had a problem like that when I installed Vegas Video 4. I wanted to try it out. Anyway after the install, it messed up Premiere. It would crash while encoding.
After a quick system restore, (thanks to Ghost) I was back to normal. The leason I learned, was only run what you use. I run the least codecs I need and I have no problems whatsoever.
You may also try re-installing Premiere.Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........ -
Try frameserving to TMPGEnc it will save you one step and discspace for the .avi file. As to your other problems ,sorry, I cant shed any light but I have a similar configuration as you ( XP Pro 2gig P4 1gig DDR) and I dont have any problems.
Frameserving info is in the how to section. -
Amazing! Thanks for the suggestion afish...I followed the frameserving how to guide and things worked out perfectly. Good thing too because Premier even crashes when I try to export my timeline as DV AVI, so I am even unable to export to AVI, and then import that into TPMG.
It's a few extra steps, but it worked like a charm. It just upsets me that I paid all this money for Premier 6.5 and the damn encoders aren't working. They work on smaller files (maybe less than 10 minute timelines) but not the larger 45-60 minute timelines. I don't think it's Adobe's screw up, probably just some idiosyncrasies with my machine and Adobe.--Rob -
Maybe the 512 RAM is holding the computer up on those long 60 minute timeline encodes. I monitor the CPU and RAM usage while Adobe is encoding and all seems OK. Anything else I should look into.
Racer-X, how do uninstall the codecs I'm not using. They come packaged with Premier. Are they in the plug-ins directory or soemthing?--Rob -
You should be able to uninstall codecs in the "Add Remove Programs".
I have 512 MBs of DDR ram and it works fine.
Premiere 6.5 uses Main Concept Encoder v1. If you download v1.3, You have to remove old version before installing new version.Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........ -
As you've found, this is a general Premiere issue, not specifically related to the MPEG Encoder. It's generally fixed by adding the following two lines of text to the Prem60.ini file:
[Override]
PreferDSCodecs=1
Make sure to leave a blank line above those two lines of text. Also, put those lines at the end of the file and make sure to save with the same name, overwriting the existing Prem60.ini file.
