  1. What is it that I need to make some files I have as MPEG-2 to DVD. I was thinking I would be able to put 4 of these files on one DVD since they are only 45mins each.

The MPEG-2 Files are muxed (I think that's what they are called), 480x360, FPS 23.98. I'm not sure if that is DVD specs...

What do I need to download or/ buy to help me with the burning process. I am hoping to do this cheap, however if it's not possible to be cheap on the Mac then I will have to pay up for I have no interests on doing the buring on my PC (yuck).

    Thanks for any help!

  2. Unless your DVd-Player will play DVD-SVCD (I doubt it), you'll have to reencode. I'm a PC user, btw, so I would recommend PC tools.....You need to copy that SOB over to your PC and reencode using TMPGEnc into half-D1 resolution, making sure you have TMPGEnc set to apply the 3:2 pulldown flags.

Oh no, I'm not going to try to play with TMP again. That program didn't know how to handle these files right when I was trying to convert them to VCD (I didn't have a DVD burner then). :: shakes his head ::

There has to be a way to do it on the Mac.

well the best method includes some pricey software, the mpeg-2 decoder (30$, cheapest part) the mpeg-2 encoder (included in dvd studio pro 1000-500$) and quicktime pro.. if you have all those then ill go into detail about the process (which has already been talked about a million plus times, so i dont wanna have to repeat myself or anyone else) oh and you need to have a g4 too... and speaking of which we are no longer in the arcaic days when we need to use... *cough* inferior pc tools to do our work in VPC (which i never did anyways) so dont worry even if you dont have all the things above its still possible.. however a LOT slower.

Ryan, you can do this very easily using ffmpeg and sizzle.

I am not sure if you were interested in having menus, but it is out of the question if you want to keep this simple.

FOA, try just dragging your mpeg files to sizzle and see if it will accept them and author the disc. That would be the first thing to do.

If it accepts them and authors it, you are in business.

Another idea is to use Ross's MissingMPEGTools. Generate a video_TS folder from a folder of MPEGS. This works a lot of the time as well for non-compliant MPEG streams.

However, I cannot guarantee that this will work if you plan on playing this back on your XBox.

Another solution is to change the MPEG header so that DVD players and authoring programs will see it as a standard resolution of 720x480. You can either follow Ross's Guide for doing this at http://homepage.mac.com/rnc/EditMpegHeaderIFO.html

OR you can use a program for Virtual PC called MPEGHeaderCorrector. This program for VPC is very very fast and only takes about 5 seconds even on the largest mpeg file on the slowest mac.

Once you change the MPEG header, try authoring the disc using the before mentioned steps and post your results.

If this does not work for you then there is another way to do this, but it will require re-encoding and I wont get into that unless i have to.

    Hope this helps.

Id prefer if you took your PRO PC comments elsewhere.

They are not constuctive to this forum, nor to the poster.

    Consider this a "pre-warning."

Its not ok to say, Im a pc user, and you would get so much more use out of a pc or pc apps are much better at handling what you want to do

    etc.

Locutus - Try Sizzle. Its a nice app for building a DVD. Or you can use DVD Studio Pro. Ive been playing around with sizzle lately, its works nicely for what it does. And its quite fast.

    Zero,

Well I tried to just use Sizzle, but it says "An error occured while (re-)multiplexing. Make sure all program streams have DVD NAV sector" I'm not sure what it's saying here? What is a DVD NAV sector?

I have tried ffmpegX on these files before, all it does make the video and audio go out of sync. I was hoping that it would be alot easier for me to put them on DVD then VCD since I have to go though the process of converting them from MPEG-2 (SVCD) to MPEG-1 (VCD).

Since these files are muxed is this going to be a problem??

What is CaptyDVD? When I did a search on what I need to do to get these files to DVD format I saw alot of talk of it. I followed a link and the program downloaded but it want'ed a serial number. Unfortnally the site it took me didn't mention of any thing about buying the software. Is this software for sale and if so how much does it cost? Will it work best for what I am looking to do or should I keep reading on ffmepg?

Again thanks for all the help you are giving and others.

From what I've seen and read in the manual sizzle seems that it does a great job. Saidly to say it doesn't like my MPEG-2 files for some reason (see above post).

For those wondering if I did a search on the topic I did and didn't find enough info on what to do. However I did find your instructions helpfull on what to do once I get to the point of burning.

The only tools that I currently have is Quicktime Pro with MPEG-2 playback, ffmpeg, sizzle, toast. I don't have iDVD (yet) or DVD Studio Pro.

My system is a Quicksilver 733mhz with 1 gig of ram. The Burner is a Pioneer A105 "Superdrive".

    galactica,

I've tried to follow your step by step instructions on your web page (very helpfull by the way) but I am having a problem converting my audio from the demuxed file.

When I try to use ffmegx I get this error message: MLM_001S192SS0.m1a: Unknown format

Is there another program that I can use that will convert this audio to the correct sampling rate?

Okay, scratch that.. Zero was able to help me with that problem... Now the problem I am running into is... The Video and Audio are sync, however at times the video and audio run a bit fast and it can be jumpy. Not all the time, but it quite funny to watch.

    What could be the problem?

  16. I use MoreMissingMpegTools to convert the m1a file to a 48Khz WAV file then back to and MP2. ffmpegX likes MP2 audio files the best.

  17. I just wanted to thanks those that have been helping me to get my files over to DVD.. I have been able to do it, and I have even made a small intro movies on my DVD's using iMove (since I'm not creating menus on the DVDs).

But I do have a strange question though. My DVD player (It's a Sony but I don't have the model # handy) and Playstation 2 play the DVD's fine. But my Mac doesn't play these DVDs right all the time, and Zero mentioned that they might not work on the X-Box which most of the time is correct.

    Why is that?

why they dont play on your mac i have no idea... They should wlays play fine. If the playback is slower, make sure you are using an internal drive and that you dont have a thousand processor intensive apps running.

AS for your X-Box, they wont always play because the X-Box is a hunk of snot. Buy a Gamecube. Just kidding. It's because of the DVD-R media itself. The X-Box was designed initially to NOT be able to play DVD-R media at all as a measure to combat Piracy since its games are on DVD-ROM. However, there are now discs that can and will playback on it. I have found that the darker the bottom of the disc, the more likely it will play. You can buy discs that say they are specifically rated to play on the X-Box.

    hope this helps.

  19. Very cool of you guys to help him through this !!

I was wondering if you think that soon we will have a app that basically you can drop any .mpg-X file on it and it will give out a burnable DVD file. On top of that i would like the app to be able to adjust the output so that i could fit up to four hours on one disc even if the quality sucked.....

May be toast 6 is heading this way?:

    • New: Drag & drop any video file4
or your iMovie into Toast’s Universal
    Video Converter.

4 Any QuickTime video file format or QuickTime
    video codec plug-in.

    • New: Create Video CDs, Super Video
CDs, or DVDs, with menus, buttons,
and chapters, and view them on a
    home DVD player or computer.
    • New: Plug & Burn™ and create video
discs directly from your DV camcorder
    content, automatically, and effortlessly.

well one can always hope! i guess we will know more soon....

did you look at my website?
I have a SVCD (which is mpeg2) to dvd tutorial. Its REALLY easy and FAST! as long as you have the mpeg2 file muxed and the audio is set to 48khz

if not it explains how to get it that way.
    Give her a try.

Usually because of SVCD resolution, you get an area that shows up as a "mirror slide" i call it, on your mac, but that isnt seen on a tv. Give it a try, its really easy. I do this for all my basic movie only MPEG2 to DVD.
It even has chapters as you will see described.

Now, if you want menu's, thats another story.

Nope, not looking for menu's.. The intro movie I created for these DVD's is fine for my use. As for your web site.. See in my earlier post you will see that I stated that I was using your step by step instructions, but ffmpeg didn't like the audio file. So I ending up using Gumby and MPEGPowerTool and I was able to re-encound the audio file.

To be honest, it's no big deal that it doesn't play on the Mac the DVD's I am making are for home use (better sound!!! LOL), I was just wondering why they weren't.

    Anways THANKS TO EVERY ONE!!!!!!

The DVDs can be played in my iBook fine.. The DVD ROM drive I am using in my quicksilver is Pioneer 105. I removed my CDR drive and put this in. Is it possible the DVD player wasn't installed correctly on my Quicksilver?

Oh Zero strangly enough the DVD-rs sometimes work in the X-Box.. ::: shakes his head ::: But like I said it's no big deal, I do not plan on playing DVD's on my X-Box or Playstation 2.
