  1. I have a large AVI file that I can open and play in QT fine. I want to convert it to mpeg 1 to make a VCD.

Since it is too large to fit on one VCD (ffmpeg won't split it for me, but that's another topic), I am trying to cut it with QT. However, I am unable to save the file as a .MOV file. The beach ball spins and spins, and I only get a file about 400 kb or so.

Divx doctor also corrupted the hell out of it, and lost my sound, etc etc.

Any things I might try to check the AVI file to see what the problem is? Any other reommended software that might work?

    thanks

why wont ff split it for you? What is the error?

Furthermore, you say that it plays fine in Quicktime, which is rare for a .avi file. What codecs is it using for audio and video? This is very important to know in order for me to help you.

I agree with ZeroSix almost NEVER will quicktime open a true .avi (divx) file and let you see it with sound!
thats the whole point of divx validator.

if you cant cut the file with ffmpegx, then there is perhaps something wrong with the file itself.

most likely this is a "downloaded movie" since its a "large avi file"
