MY DAUGHTER HAS A COMPUTER WITH ONLY A CDROM. CAN IT PLAY MY MOVIES FROM DIVX AND OTHERS? OR DOES SHE NEED TO BUY A
    DVD PLAYER?

  2. She needs a software player, most of them plays (S)VCD.
For playing divx files a divx-codec is required.

DivX and XviD are not a problem and her PC will play via the media player, you can get DivX / XviD codecs from the Tools setion of this site, you may be better advise to install one of the DivX bundle packs kicking around.
VCD and SVCD are not directly supported by Windows Media and patches have to be installed for them, i cant tell you where as it breaks the rules, they are available though on the web.

Then how come I've been playing (S)VCD with Windows Media Player without your illegal patches?

webbub, you can start with a free official divix player here
    http://www.divx.com/divx/

  7. Yeah, one just needs to have an mpeg2 codec installed for Windows Media Player to play SVCD. (And there are some free ones available in tools.) But the most recent version of Windows Media Player is very buggy, so you're best going with PowerDVD or WinDVD.

  8. If you want to be able to use the menus and such on a S/VCD, you will need to get a player that understands PBC. That usually means one of the software DVD players like WinDVD or PowerDVD.

I believe that there is a free SVCD player somewhere in the Tools page: https://www.videohelp.com/tools but I personally haven't used it. It is apparently reasonably good.

You could be right and i was only trying to help, i thought windows media player didnt have native support for MPEG2 and thats one of the reasons you cant directly play DVDs on your PC, another was copyright issues, its not illegal just frowned upon.

  10. Rimmer,

It was great that you were trying to help. No one's intent was to attack you. It was just amusing because while there are many many things that people on this forum do that the Motion Picture or Recording Industry of America would claim are illegal (including back-ups that are clearly protected by the doctrine of fair use), playing a VCD or a DVD on Windows Media Player is not one of them!

By the way, you may not have been aware that Windows Media Player 9 (which only works with XP) comes with DVD support. It doesn't really work, of course, but the intent is there to make Windows Media Player an all digital media player.

  11. David is totally right.

BTW I think Windows Media Player worth f***-all and I hardly ever use VCD, I just didn't like the idea it was against the rules.

    Rimmer209, I'm sorry if I hurt you.
