  1. Man, talk about crazy...damn near entire NYC is without power. Not only NYC..but some places in Canada and as even far West as Ohio/Cleveland mainly...are without power. Some type of issue with the power plant caused this...they said it isn't terrorist related but there must literally be MILLIONS OF PEOPLE just leaving their cars on the street and walking. Traffic lights aren't working...nothing is working...it's just like something out of a movie.

Damn...and it will be at least several hours before power is restored.....we aren't talking about some 2000 total populated city....this is NYC! This is pretty damn crazy.

I can't beleive NYCers just abandon their cars when the lights stop working. Traffic lights break down round here, some workshy road crew hangs a little out-of-order sign on each post and we treat it like a 4-way stop sign junction until they get round to repairing it a week or so later.

Just goes to show the utter chaos that COULD be caused by an organised terrorist strike on the US power grid...

That must have looked VERY interesting from space.

  6. This brings up a great discussion point...

If I live on the east coast and my power is out... what is the best / fastest way to rip The Matrix, which tools, and on what media work work the best?

I should have put my modem on the back-up just so I could come and complain. Power was out for 5 hours. But not everywhere. Strangest thing I even did see. Someparts had power, some parts not. Separated by only a mile or so. Must be only certain parts of the grid went out.

Must have really sucked to be in NYC last night.

Odd thing about this... A couple of weeks ago on Discovery, or TLC or something like that, there was a program that talked about this when it happened last time. The whole east coast went down for days. So they went and reworked the controls for the grid. Didn't do a very good job did they. They grid was supposed to be set up so that a massive outage would no longer happen. Each generator segment was supposed to disconnect, and shutdown generators that were not needed, when problems arose. That way only the damaged segment would be dark. But once again ConEd and LI power systems attempted to pull the whole load, and almost burned up (again). Maybe they need to repeat that program again!

    See, history really is important!

Wow. I live in rural england. Power outages occur ~1 once a week. Anyone over here will remember the big storms last weekend, out power was off for about 3 hours that night.
The power goes when there's lightning.
The power goes when it's a bit windy.
The power goes if it rains to hard.
The power goes if someone in the kitchen turns on the lights and the kettle at the same time
As such i keep a maglite by my desk and a stool next to the fusebox. i also have a huge box of candles at my feet. After i've finished paying off my car, a UPS is next in line. only thing is, if i want to maintain internet access i need to keep this machine 2 hubs and the server and the cable modem running. hey, what were car batteries and spare rooms invented for?

I am glad to be in Sydney today and not in NYC with the power outage. If I am in New York I could have been stuck in the elevator or the subway for hours in the heat.

A power outage is a rarity in Sydney perhaps once a year in an electrical storm.

I thought New York did have a mild summer recently and the temperature must have gone up to the 90s now.

Anyway, NYC is a great place to be and I did enjoy downloading and viewing the photos of Broadway theaters lighting up and running. I got happy memories of these shows.

I've visited NYC several times over the years. It is a bit cold here in Sydney now and maybe another trip to NYC next year to warm up.

I am from the detroit area. All i hear about is NYC in the news and all that. Believe me we didn't have it any eaiser here with no power. Still cant even go to a restraunt or fast food place cause we still have to boil our water because the water treatment plants are still trying to get up and running fully. Just went to the store and no meat available because most of us had to throw out all our food from the refrigator. Just cause power is back dosen't mean life is normal again. But i have to give it up to the guys who worked so hard to get our power back within 30 hours.
