I am having a problem creating motion menus with DVD Workshop. I succeeded with the demo, but now that I purchased the product, 1.3 is not creating the menus. I sent a question to ULEAD, and they had me do the following:
1.) I had already upgraded to 1.3. So, nothing to do here
2.) I moved some files off of my drive to free up more space. Now have 56.8GB free
3.) I did a defrag
4.) Closed ALL other programs (including some in my sys tray)
But I am still getting the error message: "Failed to render the motion menu. Error: 80041b6b". Now, of course, ULEAD is not responding to my query about the problem. (Anyone else have any better luck with their support?... Oh well...that's another topic)
Anyone else have this problem, and get it resolved?

The software is working fine here on my machine.
I have the AC-3 version running on Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
What are the attributes of your source files?
How did you acquire your source files.
Usually, that's the cause of about 99% of such hang-ups.
By the way, the motion menu tutorials on the Ulead Web site were pretty helpful to me:

I'm not sure what you are really asking re: attributes of my source files. I am running XP Pro, SP1, and the attributes to me mean Read Only, Hidden, etc. Based on that, it is not read only, or hidden. In the advanced attributes, they are set to fast searching, ready for archiving, and compress. (Hmmm...I may try turning off the compress attribute and see what happens)
With regards to tutorials: I don't think theres much to learn. Click on the Motion Menu option, right? I have done this successfully with the trial version...but not since I got the production version. However, I appreciate your putting the link there, and I WILL go take a look.
My source files are of two types: one of the menus are a MPG file that actually came with Roxio 6, and is specifically for motin menus in that product (and did work on teh trial burn I did); the others are of movies that I am actually burning to disk. I dropped the move to teh menu so that it would be an motion menu (not menu button).
Since I posted this, ULEAD did finally reply, and they told me the usual "Uninstall, delete temp files, delete old directory, reinstall, put latest patch on" thing, which I did do...but still no workee.
Not getting much done, as I am waiting to get this working on the motion menus. Don't guess they are that important, may give up on them soon. Thanks
Roger -
Well, I set the compression flag off, and waited for that to apply to all files, and tried again. Still no luck.
I went to the tutorials. Didn't see anything new there.
Also, I did a test where I created a new project, and I used one of ULEADs motion menus and a very small MPG to create a DVD directory. Same failure.
There must be something installed on my PC that is conflicting. I dunno. I'm waiting for ULEAD again. Or someone here that has already conquered this problem. Thanks

I ask because I've read about infinite problems associated with strange MPEG files 'ripped' from commercial movie discs, for example.
Authoring programs are primarily designed to serve - among others - users of camcorders who wish to record video productions to discs.
Source files with odd-ball attributes are often problematic for virtually all programs on the market.
I'm getting great results with the motion menu tools in Ulead DVD Workshop.

I thought that might be what you meant by attributes as well.
More specifically on attributes: the ones that are burned by me that don't work are created as MPGs from Adobe Premier; the rate was set as variable, with a MAX of 7000, and a MIN of 3000, and they averaged about 5000; MPEG -2;720X480; NTSC; 48KHZ.
Again, I have had success creating them when I had the demo. But that's been a little while, and I have probably installed something else since then (for sure, MS Critical Updates...I always install them). So, something must be causing problems.
Since starting this thread, I have also tried writing to my 80GB C: Drive. I thought maybe writing to the 160GB drive was causing some kind of problem.
Specialist...Glad it's working well for you.Thanks

Here are the settings right from Premier:
Video settings:
video stream type: DVD
frame size: 720 x 480
frame rate: 29.970 (drop frame)
aspect ratio: 4:3 Display
bitrate: variable, avg 5.00, max 7.00
Audio settings (PCM):
frequency: 48.0 kHz
Multiplexer settings:
program stream type: DVD
bitrate: variable, 10.08 Mbps maximum
max file size: off
When working in DVDWS, I try to burn to a directory first. I select High Quality (that way it doesn't re-encode), and I immediatedly get the following error message:
MPEG audio is not a standard Audio type for NTSC DVD. Do you still want to us it?
If I select no, it just wants aborts the burn. If I select YES, it fails with teh same error as this thread is about.
If I select Custom, Compression, and no matter what I select from there, I get the error:
The settings you have chosen do not match the current disc format. Do you want to use the default template? When I select YES, it comes back with 4 times the size for teh files estimate (16 GB instead of 4GB), so I don't even try that.
Of course, again, I can select a file that comes with ULEAD, for example, NTSC MPEG2.MPG, as the motion menu, and that fails as well. Thanks
Roger -
Have you tried using LPCM audio instead of MPEG audio?
Jerry Jones
http://www.jonesgroup.net -
Well, you will notice that the settings in Adobe are PCM. I don't know
what the difference is between PCM and LPCM. But, there is no LPCM in
Adobe.
So, I have tried LPCM form DVDWS, but the only way I can select LPCM
there is to select Customize when I select the Make Disk option. From
there, I select Compression, and it is set to LPCM. I mention all this
in my last post, I get an error, and it wants to burn 16GB which wouldn't go on a DVD. So, no, I hadn't tried.
But, just to see if it will get past the problem point, I went in and
did it and told it to put it in a directory (Which is the way I usually
do it anyway.)
It is converting the files. I'm not sure why it is converting the files: maybe because it needs to convert the Audio, and it of course is inside of the MPG files.
After a few hours, it failed with the same error. Thanks

This is a common problem with DVDWS. If you go to the DVDWS forum you will see many others trying to deal with this.
I had problems as well. I upgraded my RAM to a top brand with heat spreaders. This seemed to do the trick. Make sure your RAM and CPU are kept cool, and do a scan disc to correct any corruption on the disc surface.
Let us know how things turn out. -
Hi
I have gone to teh DVDWS forums (2 that are noted at ULEAD), and found just a few people struggling with this. I searched, I might point out, by the error code. If I do a more ambiguous search, I might find more.
Only one that I found that had a fix, and that was by reinstalling, which I did quite some time ago.
I haven't tried the Scan disk yet, although I have 3 drives, and they are defragged, one of them quite well, and it fails on both of them. So, I'm not hopeful...but I'll try everyting that is offered.
I'm beginning to think I should just give up on motion menus. I'm not getting anything done waiting on a fix for this.
One thing for sure...ULEAD Tech Support is of zero help! They come back with some little thing to try, several days after sending them a request.
Oh...interesting to hear about the RAM thing. My RAM is the ram that came with my computer: Gateway. Now, I don't know if they use a mixed bag of memory or not. Be interesting to hear if any one else has any thougts.
I'll let you know what I see after the SCANDISK.
Thanks for your thoughts.Thanks

Based on what you've described, I am of the opinion that your system has an issue.
I don't know if it's a *software* issue or a *hardware* issue, but there's an issue.
I would love to be able to troubleshoot your system for sake of demonstrating that this program works great, but I'm sitting in a room in Boise, Idaho and there's no way for me to specifically diagnose what is happening in that box.
Like I said:
I have THREE WORKSTATIONS and they're creating motion menus without a problem using Ulead DVD Workshop 1.3 - the same program you are using.
So you can go ahead and insist it's a program problem, but I don't believe that for a second when I have the same program cranking out motion menus - on three computers - and never once have I encountered that error message you've reported.
Let me ask you this:
Have you tried creating just a short motion menu?
As a test?
And this time use the encoder *IN DVD WORKSHOP* and not Adobe Premiere.
Try creating just a short simple video with a short simple motion menu.
Then try to burn that to a DVD-RW.
If you still encounter the message, then I would infer that something went wrong with your installation.
As for Ulead tech support, they are excellent - in my experience.
They have never failed to answer my questions.
There are three methods for getting help:
1. FAQ:

2. Telephone contact:

P.S.
When you do the new 'short test' - could you capture using Ulead DVD Workshop?
This way I know what type of DV .avi file you're using as the source.
After you capture from a DV camcorder, the file's attributes should be as follows:
NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
Microsoft AVI files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Field Order A
DV Video Encoder -- type 1
DV Audio -- NTSC, 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo
Once you have a short file with these attributes, then ENCODE to an NTSC DVD MPEG-2 file with the following attributes:
NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Field Order A
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: 8000 kbps (CONSTANT)
LPCM Audio, 48 KHz, Stereo
Then author and burn.
If this doesn't work, then I'll know it's the installation.
I was lying down a few moments ago and puzzling over your problem description in my mind.
Then I recalled something else about users of Adobe Premiere.
Many of them had run into an incompatibility that required installation of the MPEG VIO DRIVER UPDATE patch on the Ulead Web site:
http://www.ulead.com/tech/dws/dws_ftp.htm
Usually the incompatibility is manifest by an error message that says 'load MPEG vio driver error.'
But I've also read reports from a couple of users who say this patch fixes another message: 'V129.'
If you haven't installed it, then give it a try.
It may not correct your specific issue, but it really should be installed by anybody who is running Adobe Premiere anyway.

Hey. I really appreciate your detailed replies and interest in helping!
I will take your suggestions and try and let you know how it goes.
Before I sign off and start that, I do have a few comments in reply to your message:
With regard to it being my system: I think if we read this thread again, we will see that I think it is probably some 'conflict' based on something else installed on my system that is not on other's systems that work. That is another way of saying it is the system, sort of. It may very well not be DVDWS in and of itself, but something is different here that is in conflict with the program. Nowhere did I insist it is a DVDWS problem. But I do think it is a problem due to the combination of things installed on this computer that DVDWS does not get along with. But, I don't want to uninstall the many ( I do have a lot ) of programs from my system 1 by 1 to figure that out. For example, I keep my system updated with ALL Microsoft Critical Updates. I wouldn't be surprised if one of those is the culprit. So maybe the best I can hope for if that is it, is that someone will come along and say "Yeah, it was working for me, then I installed XXXX, and it quit. So if you have that take it off."
With regard to doing a small test. I noted earlier (my post in this thread dated July 10) that I used a Video that ships from ULEAD to create motion menus. I figure if the ones that ship from ULEAD don't work, none will.
With regard to ULEAD support, they have answered, but it takes several days between answers. The last time I sent them info about the fact it is still not working was 7/10. No reply. I sent another message yesterday. No reply. They may answer eventually. I've been in IT for 19 years. I understand it can take time to provide response. But that many days is ridiculous.
All that being said, I'm game to go through your suggestions.
On another point, I mentioned errors in my post on this thread dated July 11th. Do you have any feedback at all regarding those?
Thanks again for your time and attention. Thanks
Roger -
Well, I gave this a shot. Have some interesting results. Sorry for such a long post.
Please bear with me, I will probably show my ignorance of advanced video creation here. I don't blame you if you don't want to read this or reply. Anyway...
When I captured the file DVDWS shows the properties of it being like you list, with 720 X 480. When I pull that file into Premier, it shows in the properties that it is 360 X 240. (???)
I am confused by your requirements. I'm sure it's my ignorance of the programs...but here it is.
In your first message, you asked me to use the encoder in DVDWS, not Premier. Then in the follow-up message you said to use:
NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Field Order A
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: 8000 kbps (CONSTANT)
LPCM Audio, 48 KHz, Stereo
I do not see any way of burning an MPG file, and setting such settings, in DVDWS. All I see is Make Disk, and there is a list of various qualities, and Customize.
I selected Customize, but there isn't any way to set anything much. It has the Encode driver: only ULEAD MPEG.NOW offered. The Frame Size can be changed, but the default is 720 X 576 (Isn't that PAL?); All other settings on that page are greyed out and I cannot change them.
On the Compression Tab, media type in fact says PAL DVD, and is greyed out; Quality is at 70 and can be changed; Video data rate can be changed; and Audio format can be changed. All else is greyed out.
I had decided your first post was just wanting me to encode to a DVD straight from DVDWS, as opposed to the settings above. But, I am confused about what I'm seeing in the custom settings.
So, I put my small video as the video to play on the button; then I used the same video as teh motion menu. When I clicked on Make Disk, I selected the High Quality 8000 option. I got that same error " MPEG audio is not a standard audio type for a NTSC DVD. Do you still want to use it?". (What's up with that. If that's what it creates by default, why do I have to read that error all the time? Oh well)
I told it to use it, and proceeded to have it create a DVD Dirctory.
It failed with the same error we've been discussing in this thread.
Next, I loaded the AVI file into Premier to create an MPEG file per your requirements. From there I see no way to set LPCM (As I noted in an earlier post), although I can set PCM (don't know what the difference is). No setting that says anything about 24 bits; no setting about Field Order; I gave up on that.
So I tried to load it into TMPGENC. Dont see settings for anything about 24bit; field order; only offers MPEG audio.
I did look through lots of settings looking to set what you specify. Was never able to specifically set those settings and create an MPEG file.
So, I still no workee.
I do recollect having downloaded at one time from ULEAD, and still have them, DVD Burning patch, and a FIXENVIRONMENT.EXE. Reading at the site now, it says that the 1.3 has all patches, so I have not put them on. I wonder if I should try that.
I may also uninstall once more, and reinstall and see what happens.
Oh, still no reply from ULEAD. I suppose I could call them, but haven't just because I expect hour waits based on the poor response to email. Maybe I should give that a shot.
I'm about to decide that motion menus just aren't worth it.
Oh, BTW, I installed the VIO patch. That didn't help either. Thanks
Roger -
You sure are trying! its same that all software companies are the same what comes to support..after all those software are kind of expensive too
I have bad news about problems. I myself have gone through almost same kind of bath. I tryed demo it seemed nice and easy to use and whats more important it worked well. Then i got the same commercial version and the problem started. i have those same answers from they support and did all the same things no work. I rearrange my computer so that i have triple boot with one of them just for videoediting! There is nothing else installed but adobe premiere and dvdws. I still got those same strange errors. What is my solution: iam still searching for the right authoring software that works on my machine. BTW it is strange that all other software works fine but then all authoring software wont. Iam now waiting for Adobe Encoder DVD software if that could help me out. Iam also stuck and those home videos keep pailing on my desk because i cant finish any of my projects so far.. -
julbukki
Thanks for the input.
I too have nothing else failing on my machine. Your message implies you are having problems with other video software as well.
I have piddled with several different things while doing the video, and this is complicated stuff. Was doing SVCD before I got my DVD burner. Many problems worked through so far.
I'm ready to give up onthe motion menu for now. I am going to try actually calling ULEAD tech support on the phone. But, frankly, I'm sure that this problem is dependent on some combinatino of what is on the system that DVDWS won't work with. I'm sure it's difficult for them to troubleshoot. Like I noted in my earlier post, this problem will probably not be fixed until someone just happens to install an offending package and realize it when it breaks their DVDWS, and can start letting people know.
If this thread ends w/o a fix...and if I ever get it fixed...I will update this post. Thanks

Thanks for your detailed reply. I performed those things, and it worked.
So, I have done quite a bit more testing; and I called ULEAD Tech support. They also thought that the fact that when I opened the Customize tabs when I go to create the files and found it set (greyed out) that it was set to PAL, when the project is NTSC, was a problem. To make a long story short, it turned out that there are two problems: 1) The project was corrupt (I've had this happen a couple other times...don't know why this happens) 2) MPG files can be problematic for DVDWS to work with. If I use AVI files as the source for the menus, it always works fine. If I use MPG files, sometimes it generates, but then the end product doesn't play the video, just the audio (I'm talking about menus here...the videos that the menus point to work fine.)
Another thing I am experiencing that I don't understand: Although I had no such problem when I first created my project, now that I am creating it again, it will not create chapters. When I click on the create chapter button, DVDWS works at it for maybe 5 minutes, and eventually bombs out with an APP error in MPEGIN.DLL.
I am suspicious of my MPEG files, but on the other hand, everything worked great in creating a DVD, except I cannot create chapters.
I think I will give up on this set of files for now, and go with a chapterless DVD. I will create some new, smaller files, and see what happens. Will open a new thread on that topic if I continue to have problems.
I suspect the answer is to not render the AVIs to MPEGS outside of DVDWS. I know that AVIS work fine. But, that then presents a disk space problem.
Thanks for all of your help! Thanks
Roger -
Update on the topic of MPG files being problematic in DVDWS. See this link for the details:https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=172742&highlight=.
This fixed my problem with working with mpgs in DVDWS; and it fixe the problem of DVDWS bombing out when creating chapters. Thanks
