  1. Has anyone else encountered problems using TMPGEcn DVD Author when it comes to the editing or creating chapters on large MPEG2 files (1 gigabyte or more)? Everytime I try to edit one of my imported files (like a decrypted VOB file), the whole program crashes.

Is this a flaw in the program?

  3. Yeah, I have the updated version. The importing isn't the problem - it's the editing feature which is crashing everything.

[sigh] And I just spent almost a hunnert bux on this program...

Are you doing MPeg2 files or VOB? I have not played around with VOB in TMPGEnc DVD Author, but I have been doing some LARGE mpeg2 files.

As a mater of fact I did 2 tonight I had messed up durring the capture.

One did not shut down using the timer durring capture and recorded several hours of black screen I had to cut. 8 Gig file, after cutting out the black screen and Authoring it was about a 3.5 GIGS for the DVD. Burned the files also with TMPGEnc DVD Author and the disk works fine.

Other large mpeg2 I did tonight was a friends vhs tape of her kids school band and graduation. Booger captured as nearly 6gigs! Authored it with TMPGEnc DVD Author and ignored the warning I got due to the over size. It seemed to work fine making a 6gig DVD
I used DVD2one to shrink the files to make the DVD. I am burning it now onto a -rw to see how it turned out.

TMPGEnc DVD Author never gave a error though on these files tonight, the only thing I really did as oversized!

I also did a couple Mpeg2 files that were more a standard 3-4gig, with chapters, cuts, etc.. and no errors yet. I just installed 1.5 and got it working the other night, but so far as I mentioned with these few files it's working great for me. Also version 1 worked good too.

I burned the disks I have made so far with TMPGEcn DVD Author also, to test the built in burner. Disks work for me on my set top and a friends dual DVD/vhs unit great.

    I am running W2k pro.

I also made and burned a disk that consisted of 4 mpeg2 files, added chapters and cut unwanted parts. Menu I did backgrounds and thumbs, it worked great too. I have not tried playng with the motion menu's yet, but will very soon.

Based on my short experience thus far, I would have to say the program is very well designed and very stable, at least on my system and for me so far.

Have you tried those same files in any other programs? I think I would look towards a problem with the files, perhaps a corrupt install, or other problem if you are doing actual mpeg2 files.

  5. I am using MPEG2 files created by TMPEGEnc DVD Author from VOB files.

As you know, Author gives you the option of saving the MPEG2 files on the harddrive after it imports them. I am using those files to edit after they are processed.

It drives me nuts that DVD Author can't edit large MPEG2 files it has created.

give all of the details on what you are trying to do

you may not need to convert the vob to mpeg as most people

are assuming that what you have to do as most guide say that

is what you have to do

  7. I want to compile a "greatest scenes" DVD to demonstrate personally and privately my home theater.

I decrypt a dual layer DVD to extract the VOB file using Smart Ripper or DVD Decrypter to my HD.

I obtain the file using "Add Video" from my HD. I then select the title want to edit and burn on the DVDR.

I choose the option to "copy the video clip data to the HD" so I can edit it easier.

Once in the "Chapter cut edit" mode, it freezes the moment I try to set a chapter point ahead of the clip.

Incidentally, this occurs even if I try to "Add DVD Video" after creating a specific "Video_TS" folder of a specific VOB using InfoEdit to create the IFO files.

It also occurs if I try to obtain the VOB file directly from the source DVD using "Add DVD Video."

I notice that this problem mainly occurs with dual layer DVDs.

Could it be that the TMPGEnc DVD Author-created MPEG2 files are being corrupted with dual layered discs?

  9. Ok, your doing something totally different than I,

I just been capturing Mpeg2 files and making DVDs. I haven't been playing with DVDs to make DVDs, so I don't know anyting about how that works.

Can you convert your VOB files to plain Mpeg2 with another program, then try what you are doing and see if that works?

I'm in the middle of a project now or I would try doing a DVD greatest clips also and see if it worked on my system. But I'll be tied up awhile!

So far I have not had one error in TMPGEnc DVD Author, to good to be true, so I need to figure out how to BREAK SOMETHING so I know I am not dreaming here

  10. Vance:

With respect as to which movies I've been backing up with selective VOBs:

Well, I just tried SUPERMAN and it worked pretty well (darn accurate for MPEG2 editing).

SUPERGIRL, however, did not fare so well. The program crashed. (The DVD is made by Anchor Bay, which may have lesser quality control.)

THE TERMINATOR (not the latest edition) also didn't work.

    STREETS OF FIRE worked.

    SOUND OF MUSIC worked.

A few dual-layered...umm..."special interest" discs would also make the program crash.

However, some single layered special interest DVDs worked beautifully.

I wish I could detect a pattern. I have to assume it's directly related to how the original DVD sources were produced.
