  1. When using TMPGenc to encode a dv2 file to an Xvid OR DivX5 with 2 pass encode TMPGenc always says "An error occurred when the video was encoded" when I press the start button. 1 Pass CBR works fine but I cannot get 2 pass to work at all. Am I doing something wrong here ?

If single pass works, then both your avi and Tmpgenc seem in perfect health.

The only idea I have is that perhaps the temporary folder in Tmpgenc is invalid and you have selected to cache pass-1 results.

Through the menu, select Option-->Environmental Setting and in the General TAB check to see if the Temporary path assigment is valid. Perhaps you have removed disk. Correct it if invalid.

Also, check the value in the second TAB, CPU. The bottom frame (Cache setting), has a check box and a value. For 2 pass VBR, you should always have this caching enabled and allow for as much size as you expect the size of the encoded file to be. Works upto 30% faster.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

  3. Well i have followed the 2 steps you suggested. I have checked the Cache settings (set this at 4gb) and have made my temp folder as E:\temp.

Still get the same error though, 1 pass works fine but 2 pass is a no go

Any further suggestions ? You did get my Tmpegenc settings right - but ammending them ain't made a difference. I am trying Xvid codec at the moment - but this also happens with Divx5.

  4. I had a similar problem (I could encode 1-pass, but not 2-pass).

However, I wasn't working with dv2 files. I was working with MJPEG captured files. It turned out to be a problem with Pinnicale's DC10Plus MJPEG codec. When I got PICVideo MJPEG codec, I was able to use 2-pass with no problems.

Maybe it's a problem with the codec that decodes your dv2 files (which i'm not familar with; or does TMPGEnc do that itself?)

    hope this helps...

  5. When trying DivX 5.0.5 I get "Could not initialize VFW Codec. This codec cannot be used for some reason."

When trying Xvid I get "An error occured when the video was encoded."

1 pass works fine but not 2 pass.

    Edit :

Also happens with Vdub - "Video Compression Error: unspecified error (-100)"
