Anyone else find the TBC on the panasonic kind of weak? The one on my jvc vcr is better but the one drawback is it only fixes the fairly good recordings. Bad recordings suffer from various instability in the picture or other distortions. The panasonic has no problem with even bad vhs.

Yes, someone please tell us how good this TBC is on the Panasonic. I too have a JVC VCR with TBC which seems to fix things like color flicker that other supposed TBC's don't fix at all. I have several tapes that exhibit this color flicker problem (thank you, cable TV), but many of them aren't on VHS so I can't put them in the JVC. Will the Panasonic fix the unsteady color problem? If not the Panasonic - is there one that will that isn't too expensive

There are several grades of TBC's available.
1. Cheap. Does very little. Example: SIMA CopyMaster. Price $40
2. Average. Does a fair share of work, but not perfect. Example: JVC 7900 and 9600 SVHS VCRs and the Panasonic E50 and other simliar VCRs and recorders with built-ins. Price $100
3. Hefty. Does a lot. Example: DataVideo TBC-1000. Price $300
4. Professional. Does everything but cook your breakfast. Example: DataVideo TBC-4000/6000. Price $900
So when comparing TBCs, be sure you categorize them properly. I have a JVC 9800 and a DataVideo TBC-1000, which appears to be a fairly common setup, and it works great. And my JVC does more horizontal corrections while the DataVideo does more vertical corrections.
I'd consider getting one from category #3, even if it serves as an addition to a #2 variation.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

I have no information on the AVT-8710, and given the price, I'm suspect of its ability to outperform the DataVideo line. However it may be fine. I just don't have access to one for testing. Everybody I know has DataVideo.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

I can say the AVT-8710 doesn't fix color flicker problems like the JVC machines. But on the other hand the AVT-8710 removes all copy-protection and makes the image look a little more film-like which the JVC doesn't do. So I guess if you want to have the best of everything, you need to spend big money.
