    Chaos...

You have to have a DVD drive that can read a DVD RAM disc in your PC.

I use the Toshiba 1712 DVD drive in all my systems. Newegg has them for $39 delivered to your door..

    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=55&manufactory=12...tby=14&order=1

DVD RAM discs come in two flavors - disc alone or in a cartridge. The Toshiba will only accept the disc alone. You can remove a DVD RAM disc from a cartridge type to be read in the Toshiba..

I have a Panny HS2 and use this method to transfer video from it to my PC for further editing..

    Regards,
    Rick

Thanks!! thats what i thought but i wanted to make sure i was not missing something.
    I found 2 dvd-ram burners on e-bay, 1 for 75.00 and one for 122.00,
I am using dvd-ram, just llike dvd+r's that come in a jewel case, no cartridge.
Does the toshiba read "+" or "-" also ?

Dang it!!! Thanks for telling us about a deal we couldn't get Just kidding. I know you will enjoy it. I also got to brag about getting mine for $349 back in Feb2003. I believe LG makes a DVD-ROM drive that reads RAM discs for only $39.99 @ Wal-Mart as well. You can now get a 5 pack of Panasonic DVD-RAM discs in thin cases @ Target for $22.99.

    Hey Erwin
heh heh heh It's kind of a lucky thing, they had a samsung that had been marked down 2 times to 359.00, was thinking about getting that one then after the weekend i went in on monday & saw the e30 sitting there for 249.00, they had just put it out for that price before i got there & the temptation was just too much, i couldn't silence the voices anymore, my girlfriend kept trying to drag me away but i couldn't leave it there for that price
I have alot of laser disc's i want to transfer over to dvd & now i can WHOO HOO!!!
Thanks for the info on the lg, i really like the lg stuff, i already have 2 lg cd burners and was thinking about replacing my nec dvd+ burner with the lg +&- dvd burner. and off we go......... to walmart

    Hey Rick
I picked up one of the toshiba dvd-rom drives, i can see the files on the dvd-ram but how do i get them to my hard drive to edit and re-encode to burn back to a dvd+r ?
ISOBuster will let me see them but it says i have to register it to rip them from the disc, DVDDecrypter keeps giving me a I/O error & says Disc Authentication Failed - Reason: Failed To Get Disc Key & SmartRipper Won't read the drive or disc at all ??
    HELP??

  7. Why don't you just record to a dvd-r disk & put that in your computer? Cause those E30s write dvd-r too....(Accu disks are great).

PS: you might search the board, we have a lot of E30/e50 topics

Ummmm..... cause i have like a ton of LD's and that would waste alot of dvd-r's to transfer them to my hd
& i figure if ncgoldwinger is already doing it, who better to ask

  9. I have the older e-20. I record onto Ram because they are rewritable. I've been buying the one without the cartridge because they are cheaper and I don't have to bother taking them out of the cartridge to use in one of my two computers. In one of my computers I have a Toshiba 1712, which reads bare ram discs. Got it from A2Z computers for $41 about 6 months ago. The burner in that machine is the Sony dru-500. I record in the E-20, transfer .vro file to the HD using the Toshiba, change extension to .mpg, and author in Ulead DVD Workshop. In Workshop, find the dws.ini file, open it, change ac3=0 to ac3=1, and you can hear the ac3 audio (which the Panny E-20, 30 etc. records) as you author. In the final burning stage on Workshop, you have to put a check mark in the box that says something like "do not convert compliant files". BTW, you need to upgrade to version 1.3 to do this. This way, the video is not re-encoded and the ac3 audio passed through untouched. Also, to get the Toshiba to read rams, you have to get a driver from the Panasonic site. Here's the link: http://www.panasonic.co.jp/dvdram/lim/eoem/index.html

My other computer has the Panasonic 321 DVD Ram/-r burner and it takes the ram with cartridge, so I can rip, transfer vro's, and burn with the same unit. You might be able to find one real cheap because I saw the newer 521 for less than $200. It burns Ram/-r/-rw/cdr/cdrw.

I get great results using this method. There is a lot of discussion on www.avsforum.com on this subject. Do a search for .vro. Also do a search for these member names: vferrari, videonut, fas. There's more too.

Also, the 1712 does read +rw in addition to -rw and -r. Never tried a +r, but I can't imagine it wouldn't read it if it reads everything else.

    Okay,
Thanks for all the info, i have the Toshiba 1712 & it does read +r also.

The Question i am asking is
"How does ncgoldwinger or anyone for that matter, get the files from the dvd-ram disc to the hd" ? what program ? copy & paste ?
Read my earlier post for the specifics on programs i tried.
    Thanks

  11. Just drag and drop. Transfer the .vro file on the ram to your HD. Change name (or don't have to) to anything you want, but you must change extension to mpg, then bring into Ulead DVD Workshop to author. From what I have read, Ulead MovieFactor 2, can handle vro files straight from ram. The other thing I have done, is taken the same file into Ulead Media Studio Pro 7, and edited (still using ac3), then exported new mpg file to author. Its quite expensive though. Simple editing, like trimming front and back of recording, and cutting commercials can be done right on the e-30 before transfering to HD.
