  1. I have a handful of 320x240ish DIVX avi files and would like to convert them to a format I can watch on my DVD player, but am unsure what direction to go. Is there any benefit to converting 320x240 DIVX to MPEG-2 instead of MPEG-1?

Along a similar vein, is there any pont in converting a 352x240 MPEG-1 file to MPEG-2, or is it just wasted effort?

What is your target format? Converting the video will not help, if anything it will hurt.

  3. VCD or SVCD so that they can be viewed on a DVD player. With higher resolution (640x480) divx/XviD conversions I always use SVCD with VBR, but is it worth using SVCD when the source is only 320x240?

320x240 is only worth of VCD. Anything higher should be SVCD or (X)SVCD or something around 1/3 of a DVD.
