As I explained in another thread, I have problems with Toast and an external Pioneer DVR-106 burner when trying to burn DVD-Rs at 4x speed ("BUFFER UNDERRUN" message). To confirm that Toast is indeed the problem here it would be very useful if there was another app that enables burning to an external DVD burner. I checked versiontracker but only found apps that are either only able to use the internal drive (like OS Xs in-built disk copy) and/or write data discs (and not video discs). Is there another app that does the trick like Toast??

1. keep your posts within your own post. especially since its the SAME topic!
2. since you have it externally, you are limited to 3rd party software.
that leaves you TOAST!
if it were internal you could use Disc Copy, or maybe the Missing Media Burner, but having it external limits you.
IT SHOULD WORK! Have you tried it in OS9? Just for sake of argument do that.
oh, and dont make a new post when your old one is on the same topic and holds the same question! -
I don't know anyone whose ever even seen this software., but it does say it will do what you need
Dragon Burn enables Mac desktop and PowerBook notebook computer users to quickly and easily begin producing audio, data and mixed-mode CDs and DVDs without pouring over the software users guide. The new Dragon Burn multi-burning engine allows users to simultaneously write multiple CDs or DVDs. It also fully supports new 4x DVD-R internal and external drives as well as advanced CD writes including recently released 52x CD-R and 24x CD-RW drives -
Very interesting! I'll try to hunt this app down and see if it's useable!

Charismac's Discribe is for OS X and is a direct competitor to Toast. It might work better for you.

Thanks for the tip, I downloaded the discribe demo, but unfortunately it doesn't recognize the 106 drive (too new probably).

In Toast, have you tried checking the 'buffer underrun protection' checkbox in the window that pops up when you hit 'record' and lets you choose the burn speed? The 106 should have that feature, and Toast should be able to use it. That should prevent coasters when the data isn't being moved fast enough to burn at full speed. Other apps that burn at 4x would probably get the same error since it's caused by data not being accessed as fast as the burner is writing. Other options are to increase the RAM buffer in the prefs, limit the burning speed, or burn from your hard drive instead of another optical drive. Are you trying to go from 1 DVD to another directly? If so, then your reading drive might not be fast enough to keep a 4x burner fed with data, in which case you will have to burn at 2x, or rip to hard drive before burning. Checking the 'buffer underrun protection' checkbox would also prevent coasters by pausing the burning process as more data is accessed, effectively reducing the burn speed. Give us some more info on your setup and how you are copying DVDs, where the source data resides, and what other firewire peripherals you have that are working at the same time.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté." -
OMG, WiseWeasel, your comments made me look again closely at the Toast window – and Toast does NOT SHOW the "buffer underrun" checkbox at all! The drive most definitely has buffer underrun protection, so it's clearly a Toast issue. At least now I know for sure, even if I still don't have a solution for my problem.
(BTW I always burn from HD so that can't be the problem.) -
I dont think any app will let it burn at 4x on a laptop not even a g4 powerbook. (never tried it but I dont believe it will)
(laptop hard drives have slower disk spin speeds than desktops i doubt the hd could keep up at
Laptops have 5400 rpms or slower depending on your laptop the data transfer rate is slower than a desktop most desktops are 7200 and higher nowadays unless you have an older computer)
I cant even burn at 2x
what is the processor speed and ram on your laptop
I have a 366 indigo ibook G3 with 196mb of ram
I have a sony dru 500 and pioneer ao3 both I have alternated in the external case.
I had problems until I did this:
burn at 1X and turn the screen saver function and sleep function off while burning with toast
Set your toast ram buffer to 64mb (goto preferences)
I try burning at 4x on my desktop with my external drive and see what happens. -

I got an error before it started burning after I pushed record.
(it was a sense error or something)
I shut toast down and I restarted toast and tried again a it burned a 3.2GB disk with no problem at 4X no buffer underruns.
The only thing is that since my drive and cpu is kinda slow it showed 9min 56sec burn time but it actually took around 30min (1x speed) but the disk completed just fine.
I had to run off to work so Ill test the disk in my PS2 tonight. -
Interesting point about the laptop HD speed, ps2daddy. I still lean towards thinking that the 106 drive is just too new and Toast doesn't fully support it as it does not show the "buffer underrun protection" box at any speed, not even at 1x.
Later today I will go to a friend who has a Pioneer 105 drive in a firewire enclosure. This drive also supports 4x speed, but is longer on the market, so I *guess* Toast will recognize it has buffer underrun protection and I hope I will be able to burn a DVD-R at 4x speed so I know for sure the problem is not the laptop HD speed.
I have a G4 Powebook 867 Mhz with 512 MB of RAM, so I think processor speed is not an issue here. Also I put the Toast RAM cache to 64 MB but that didn'T make any difference. -

I dont think its a processor issue for you but a data transfer rate due to hard drive issue -
I have the Pioneer 104 drive (which I planned to replace), also in a firewire enclosure, and burned maybe 100 DVD-Rs without a single coaster at 1x as well as 2x speed + Toast always showed me the buffer underrun protection box (which I always ticked, of course). So generally Toast *should* give you this option if the drive supports buffer underrun protection, no matter if you're burning CD-Rs or DVD-Rs.
(Firmware version is 1.32 on the 104 – which I had to update to via a PC as Pioneer *still* were not able to provide an updater for firewire drives on the Mac.) -

And you are right about the 4200 rpm HD speed – dammit, i didn't think my HD was THAT slow! Well, I hope the test I'll do later at my friend's house will prove it's not too slow to burn at 4x speed...

A laptop HD like that can probably get 15.2MB/sec on average internally but if from a brief second it slows down below 4MB/sec it kills the disk.
HD data running though firewire will slow the drives throughput to make it slower than the 15.2MB/sec average
On my desktop G4 it worked but it still took around 3X longer than it said so even though it didnt show burnproof I am quite surprised it didnt kill my disk
Let us know what happens though
I for got to add that I think fujitsu has a 7200 RPM hard drive for laptops that you can probably replace it with if you like -
I had this problem as well. I found OS 10.2.6 to NOT be compatible with TOAST and my pioneer 105 drive. I would get a buffer underrun IMMEDIATELY after hitting "record". Try using 10.2.3 and see if it solves your problem. Then just don't update until Panther is out!

Hello
i use a pioneer 105 (1.3) with OSX 10.2.6 G4 DDR with no issues at 4x toast burn internal
i use PRINCO 4X DVD-R 4.7GB - P-DVD-R-4XP25 1 29.75
Big price drop!!: 4X
PRINCO DVD-R 4.7GB media

Result of my test with a Pioneer DVR-105 in a firewire enclosure: Toast 5.2.1 shows me the "buffer underrun protection" box, I check it, burn a 4.2 GB DVD-R at 4x speed in approx. 13 minutes! Resulting DVD plays perfectly in standalone player as well. Repeat test, same speed, same result.
Conclusion: it's a Toast issue because the 106 drive is not supported properly yet (no buffer underrun protection) or maybe a Pioneer firmware issue.
What to do: hope that Toast 6 and/or 106 firmware updates (*if* available for Mac...) will solve this problem (while keeping fingers crossed that Roxio will take a long hard look at Panther before releasing Toast 6). -

Yup its probably a firmware issue -
Just to let you guys know, I have a 15.2" PowerBook G4 running at 1 GHz with OS 10.2.6. I also have an external Lacie d2 DVD-/+R Pioneer 106 drive. I also am using Toast 5.2. From my experiences, I can burn just fine. No buffer underruns, no nothing. I am recording at 2x only because of the media. I would more than likely not agree with you guys that Toast has issues with the DVR-106. If you guys are having problems, it must be only you. I've got everything up to date and working fine. Why don't you guys try writing different media, even maybe trying to burn CDRs. Narrow down what the issue is. Don't just say that it is a buffer underrun caused by Toast because it isn't supported. Take baby steps to solve the problem, not just keep trying to burn a DVD wrong.
-
But, ninja86, does Toast even show you the 'buffer underrun protection' box? If not that clearly indicates that Toast does not recognize this capability of the drive and thus does not completely support the drive (yet). If it does show you this box, I'm seriously out of ideas as your setup is almost identical to mine (except 1 GHz vs. 867 MHz). Please report!

I think who ever said Toast needs an update for this new drive to work is correct. Aug 18th should see Toast 6 which I'm guessing will work with the new A06/106 Pioneer drives.I have a Pioneer A05/105 running in a firewire external box. It works really well with Missing Media Burner. The .5 version is the best for me with .4 version a close second. The .6 version (current) is buggy on my machine. I like it so much I rarely use Toast anymore. So sorry but Missing Media Burner isn't limited to internal DVD drives. There is also Firestarter which is a ripoff of Missing Media burner. Looks pretty but I don't like as much as the real thing.

PS. for the record. iTunes and Disk Copy as well as Disk Burner (which is what burns disks for Disk Copy) all work fine with my Pioneer A05/105 drive in an external Firewire box. iDVD works with OSX 10.15 but not Jaguar but it's not really all that useful in my opinion.

A firmware update will probably fix that.
Since the A04 does show burnproof and the A05 shows it my A03 only shows it for cd and not dvds (just like all the A06 posts in xlr8yourmac.com) but there are people that have the 1.9 firmware and they get burnproof for dvds using the A03
also if you really need burnproof right now
Since you thought the A05 was off the market here is a pioneer 105 for $159

You can sell that 106 have a little money left over and burnproof.
My biggest problem with the +/- RW DVD drives is that I cannot recopy the + r disks that I make in Toast but I can do it on a pc with no problem
