For those who have HDTV widescreen TVs can you play DVDs without the black bars? I know there are 2 kinds of DVD the one's that look like they have 1 bar up and down which I think are the 1.85 and ones that look like they have double bars 2.35 something.

Now I know the 1.85 ones play full screen on a widescreen HDTV but do the other ones have any lines?

  2. There will still be black bars. The HDTV's, have a higher resolution to produce a sharper image, but the aspect ratio is the same. You would have to change the aspect ratio of a TV to play a 2.35:1 with no black bars top and bottom. And if you did that you would have black bars at the sides on a 1.85:1 video, either that or you would have to cut parts off the top and bottom of the image..

  3. WS DVD's on regular TV will look kinda squished. Like the top and bottom of the picture are pushed towards each other. So the people look kinda fat. Some DVD players have a function to stretch it to normal size.

Most WS HDTV's have a fill function that will stretch this picture to the proper size.

Since most movies are shot in 2 basic hights you will still get black bars on most WS DVD's. I find that (mostly) Drama's & comedy's will totaly fill the whole WD HDTV picture while Action & Sci-fi's will still leave small black bars.

It's realy a Director's vision, or in the case of George Lucas... lack there of, how the movie will be shot.
Don't give in to DVD2ONE, that leads to the dark side.
