I'm pretty fond of my Nikon D1.

It was replaced by the Nikon D1H ('H' is for "high-speed", as this version has a larger cache, allowing 42 shot bursts instead of just 21 like the D1. No other differences that I know about.) Buy one here. If you insist on higher resolution, at the cost of higher speeds, you can grab the D1X. (The 'X' is for "extra resolution", and it has slower fps shutter, less shot bursts, and smaller cache.) Buy one here.

You should probably add a budget with this question.

If I were buying a 3 megapixl digital still camera this would be my choice
    Olympus C-740 3MP Digital Camera w/ 10x Optical Zoom.

I bought it's little brother or sister on sale at OfficeMax just before Christmas ( Olympus C-700 2.1MP Digital Camera w/ 10x Optical Zoom)
I know the memory media is different, I use smartmedia and this uses SD.

I assume and you can do research that this camera has all the functions of mine, but what makes it such a good value is the 10x "OPTICAL ZOOM".
Digial zoom is useless. You will need a steady hand at full zoom ( or a tripod ). or spend a lot more money to get a camera that compensates for user movement. You can shoot some really nice closeups and not worry about mp's. Here are some consumer reviews

If you purchase this camera I would recommend buying a lense extender and filters ( for camera lense protection ). The camera lense does not have an auto cover on it and if you scratch this lense it will be cheaper to buy a new camera. A lense cap for this lense extender will be hard to find. I got mine from a firm in Kansas ( if I remember correctly ) 43 mm lense cap. the lense extender is made by teggen and purchased from circuit city.

What some people do not like is the lack of an optical view finder, it has an EVF which is a mini LCD that u use like an optical, but it's more like an slr- what you see is what you get. that being said it is difficult to see images completely in very low light , but I have never had a problem shooting in low light, because the captured image is always excellent unless I muck up.

I also like the fact that I can use rechargable batteries or 4 AA's from the Minute Market/7-11.

    love these cameras

    God Bless

Sony has a budget 3.2mp digital camera out at the moment for a very good price (at least in australia), but the trade off is that there is no optical zoom with the camera- only digital. Depends what you are doing with the camera, but I would go to one that has at least 3x zoom, if not more.

I did tons of research before I finally bought the Fuji 602Z. Its a prosumer model - I wanted some creative control rather than just point and shoot, but its not cheap. It was $1000 bucks in canada but I love it still the same. Its a 3.3 MP camera capable of taking a 6MP interploated images which are quite good.

It has 6 times zoom plus dual media slots but the one feature I love is that it doubles as a camcorder taking 640x480 VGA movies, 30 FPS with mono sound. I love that feature and use it much more than I thought I would.

  8. Isn't this the DVD recorder forum?

Sorry you can't go wrong with a Canon or Nikon digi cam. The Canon S200 takes incredible pictures and the camera itself is the size of a pack of smokes, very cool!
