  1. I would appreciate if anyone of you would help me solve this mystery.

I have a Samsung SCD67 and a P4 running win2000. When hooking up the firewire, I am able to see the video but I am unable to hear the audio. I tried to capture it anyway to see whether somehow the audio cannot be heard during capturing but can during playback. However, the audio is not there. I tried multiple capturing sofware, such as those that are included in Pinnacle Video Studio, Ulead video studio, WinDV, and DVIO. None of them seemed to be able to capture the audio. HOWEVER, here's the mystery. I tried Scenalyzer and it worked. I can hear the audio when capturing as well as playing. My question is why is that? What is so special about scenalyzer that it works and the others don't. Can I change any setting for the others to behave like scenalyzer.

Scenalyzer video capturing is not as good as the other (too many dropped frame). The reason might be that it is a trial version. I do not want to buy it when I've already bought the other softwares.

Another interesting behavior is when testing it with my friend's SONY camcorder instead of my SAMSUNG camcorder, all the other software (video studio) work fine with both video and audio.

I don't know whether it is a hardware (camcorder) or a software problem.

Any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not surprised you can't hear the DV audio during capture as it does not go through the audio card. Maybe Scenaliser is somehow decoding the DV in a different way and so you can hear audio while capturing.

More worrisome is the fact that the audio does not get captured. If you look at the AVI file properties tab, does it mention an audio track at all ?

Is there some configuration on the camcorder side that is necessary ?

You've got a real puzzle on your hands there !

  3. Perhaps you should trying installing a DV codec (for example, the Panasonic DV codec) and capturing in type 2 DV avi with DVIO or DVapp. Some programs fail to recognize certain camcorders.

I have an samsung to (VP-D73) And was also confused that when I recorded audio in 16bit mode on tape the audio didn't show up att all when capturing with vegas video, adobe, ulead, pinnacle etc. But scenalyzer picked upp the sound. I had to use 12bit until I found this scenalyzer program witch is just wonderfull. No dropper frames or anything. It took just about a year to figure it out

I guess all the above programs capture software don't detect 16bit/48000kHz from samsung cams. But scenalyzer does.
    Yeah... dude

I'm afraid I can't help with your problem but you won't find a DV capture program that will let you hear audio during capture.
I use Pinnacle Studio 8.5 and whilst I can't hear it during capture it's fine during playback, edit etc.
DV capture is not capture as such, it's simply a transfer of the data.
    Good luck with your problem

  6. iaken,

You described the exact same problem. I guess that Samsung camcorder isn't as compatible as others. I just don't understand why scenalyzer does it while other more expensive programs don't.

As for those replies about that no DV program will allow you to hear audio during capture but during playback, I would have to disagree. I borrowed a sony camcorder, and I do hear the audio during capture using vegas, etc. Also, when capturing my samsung DV with scenalyzer, I also hear the sound during capture as well as playback.

As for the samsung camcorder, I will need to try the 12bit sound mode and see whether other capture programs will work. Iaken, do you hear a significant sound degration when using the 12 bit instead of the 16 bit?
