I'd been doing video editing for long, however, have never come across this rather peculiar problem.

I use VideoPlus v11 to do my video capture, editing & then DVD authoring.

When I capture video this time, I've no sound at all coming through. All I get is just the video. I've done the diagnosis to the best of my ability.

There's no sound in both in preview and in the captured file. Software setting remains just as it's when it's used last time. I've also reinstalled this VideoPlus software. I've also tried capturing in Windows Movie Maker but it does the same - hence nothing wrong with the application itself.

I've changed my Hi8 tabe in my Sony Digital camcorder but still the same, thinking it may be just the video tape, but the problem remains the same in other tapes as well - hence nothing wrong with any tapes.

There's no conflict in my device manager, so appears my sound card's working OK. I've also tried both on my PC and laptop & the problem continues - hence nothing wrong with PC/Laptop.

When I listen to the captured file, I hear bit of occassional "tick" along with buzzing sound.

When I open the LCD of my camcorder, I can hear the audio perfectly well - hence camcorder works OK.

    Can anyone help, please?

  2. Connect another device to the sound card input, do NOT record, simply validate the sound is audible thru the PC speakers.

Connect the camera output to another device and verify audible output. Since the problem occurs on two PC's, home in on the common components.

The camera output port, and the audio cable. One or both have probably failed.

Simplify the testing operation, recording adds multiple variables such as input selection. The Device Manager check only means that Windows knows the card is physically present, not that the input works, not that the input is recieving anything, and not that the correct input is selected.

    ISOLATE and IDENTIFY.

Speakers on PC along with laptop works OK.

When I capture a video & place it on Timeline, it shows Audio WITHOUT any waves to it i.e. just a straight line.

    I capture using USB cable.

Chances are it's not your components...it's your settings. Right-click on your volume icon in your tray next to the time, and open volume control. Check your settings for playback and recording...if you have the wrond device selected, you get crap sound or no sound. Adjust accordingly, and let me know if you have further questions....

After continuing to have same issue, I've tried different software but the problem continues.

I've tried Windows Movie Maker, to initially see if capture of both audio and video works well. Video capture works OKk but for Audio, it shows straight line for the wavelength. I've attached the screenshot of how my Volume control's setting look like.

When I play the recording on camcorder, I can see video and hear audio well but when I try capturing, it only captures video and not audio.

Is this a Digital8 camcorder? I believe USB should only be used for Stills capture on Digital8s (video capture will be low res), you need to use the firewire port for transferring DV.

Yes, it's Digital 8 camcorder using Hi8 tape. I used to use firewire port on my PC, as my laptop doesn't have firewire port. However, I'd been successfully able to use USB cable in the past.
