My DVD player can't play mpg's so I want to burn them to VCD or SVCD. The picutre for a VCD/SVCD looks worse than when it was just a mpg. How can I improve the picture quality for VCD/SVCD???
I'm using Nero Burning ROM to burn them

1st of all, I can't see the difference between SVCD/VCD/DVD and mpeg.
They are all mpeg one way or another.
What are you comparing: the picture on the PC's monitor or on TV?If you are not changing the resolution or bitrate, they should look all the same after authoring and burning. -
If you're re-encoding then there's always a loss in quality. If you're using nero for your encoding then there's an even bigger loss. It's better to author and burn the mpeg's straight to VCD or SVCD if they're in the correct format, ie resolution etc.

If you are, it sounds like you are capturing as an mpeg.
Id use VirtualDub, capture as an YUY2 and use huffyuy compression. Then feed that avi to tmpgenc to create the proper mpegs for burning to (S)VCD.Ejoc's CVD Page:

If you are putting the DVD into your computer you're ripping it, if you have a cable running to a video capture card on your computer you're capturing.
If you are capturing and you dont want to capture as a YUY2 and convert it to mpeg(A nice way togo to get good picture quality) set the card to capture in 480x480 for svcd, and if you are using nero <cringe> I hear theres a way to disable it from converting your mpeg and burning it as it is.

@I@n S,
crap in=crap out.
you need to start with a good source. if you already converted your video into VCD, there's pretty much no way to improve on it without the source, as all the video info is lost in VCD's low bitrate.
if you do have a good source, do try to encode into SVCD, as it is usually much higher quality than standard, compliant VCD, which is fixed at 1150 kbit/s CBR.
--------------------
but FIRST, you need to make sure if your dvd player supports SVCDs. check it out here: https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers
if not, you may be able to use the VCD Header Trick.
otherwise, you may wanna find out if your dvd player supports xVCD, as it's also higher quality than standard VCD. -

try to go with SVCD, as it is usually higher quality than xVCD...since your player does support SVCD.
the amount of movie you can fit per CD is dependent on the avg. bitrate you use. lower bitrate (quality) --> more movie per CD
so, it's a trade-off.....if you want to fit more than 45 min / CD, try to use multi-pass VBR, as that will be the most efficient at allocating the precious bitrate.
never ever use CBR...at the least, use CQ VBR. -
Maybe a little late to say this, but how about just trying VCDEasy or some other burning program of that ilk?
Or maybe just re-muxing the files as Super/VideoCD in TMPGEnc's MPG Tools menu (under "file" on the menu bar) as some programs dont put out decent streams, and Nero can get uppity about that. Or just tell it to ignore the standards.. if it *is* an mpg you have, not an avi, in which case that won't be an option.-= She sez there's ants in the carpet, dirty little monsters! =-
Back after a long time away, mainly because I now need to start making up vidcapped DVDRs for work and I haven't a clue where to start any more!
