Empty the recycle bin and if you have Norton systemWorks installed you should delete the "Norton protected files".

rarely i have to reboot to get the free space reported back properly. XP Pro here.

250 GB hdd???
almost every new hdd states its space in terms of GB=1,000 MB
normally, GB=1024 MB.
--------
so......250 GB hdd = 250,000 MB, since actually GB=1024 MB...
250,000/1024 = 244 GB actual hdd size -
233 GB is correct. They use 1000 instead of 1024 as poopyhead explains, but you must start dividing from the bytes to get the correct GB value.
250 GB = 250 000 000 000 bytes / 1024 = 244140625 kbytes /1024 = 238418 mbytes /1024= 232.8 computer GB -

@filefeeder,
like Baldrick mentioned...
when the hdd is stated to be 160 GB, that's not in computer terms....
in their terms, 160 GB = 160,000,000,000 B
in computer terms, 160,000,000,000 B = 149 GB
