Strange MPEG-1 occurence

I have a file received from a friend. It's 320x240 mpg-1 at 700000kbits encoded. It's just over 65 MB in size. My main system is an XP Pro system. When I play the file it says the length is 1:25, should be 11:34 in length. I have tried in all players that I know of, both windows players, Ace media player and The divx player.

My friend can play it fine on his XP home system. I opened the file on another system I have(machine#2) and it plays just perfectly.

I can re-encode the file in Tmpgenc an it comes to over 100MB in size. I also tried opening it in VirtualDub and some strange errors come up several times through different points in the file. The error reads 'MPEG: Anachronistic or discontinuous timestamp found in video stream 0 at byte position 7196710. But, I can play the file in virtualdub after bypassing the errors. This is the only error that comes up at several different points.

Since I know the file is good, it played fine on machine#2 running xp pro, what could the problem be with machine#1? Decoder problem of some sort, but I don't know where to start.

All other Mpg-1 files I have play just fine.

Any help or ideas of where to start would be appreciated.

Anything but Reinstall Windows, a fresh install was done a couple of months back!

1) wow...that is 700 mbit/s for a MPEG-1..... even max DVD is 8 mbit/s.

2) sometimes media player doesn't report the video length correctly. have you tried to just let media player play the file completely through?

Installing Aces codec pack did the trick. Now the file plays and reports the runtime just fine.
