  2. what are you converting the .avi files to??

are you converting to VCD (MPEG-1), SVCD (MPEG-2), DVD compliant MPEG-2???

if your goal is to put those movies onto a DVD, you should convert to DVD compliant MPEG-2. you could technically burn VCD and SVCDs directly on a DVD wouldn't making them DVD compliant (i.e. VCD-DVD and SVCD-DVD, respectively), but these will never be as compatible as DVD.

  3. I'm trying to convert them to MPEG1 because the outcome file is much smaller then MPEG2 and I can then fit a couple of movies onto a dvd-r disc....It work with one file but the rest converted with no sound, TMPGEnc would let me re-encode the audio
    I'm assuming this will work?

  4. yes...the files may be smaller, but the quality will be horrible....VCDs do not have very good quality. unless your goal is to fit as much video as possible per DVD; otherwise, you should just convert your .avi to DVD compliant MPEG-2.

    1) if you put your converted VCDs onto a DVD...you would be making a VCD-DVD. however, this is not as compatible with DVD players as a standard DVD with DVD compliant MPEG-2.

    2) DVD compliant MPEG-2 can achieve much higher quality than VCD.

  5. they are not files from an actual vcd, they're movies I have downloaded (in various formats)...does that make a difference? and there's still the sound problem, is there any particular reason why it can be converted?
    Thanks!

Try using goldwave to export the sound from your avi file as a wav file. Then when you open tmpgenc...use the avi for the video portion and the wav as the audio.

I have encountered the same problem when trying to convert ac3 sound with tmpgenc, and this method works.
