Good question. I've always used variable because I used it when I made SVCD's. Gives more bits where needed I believe.

    Yep.

Constant compression ratio means that it'll pick a compression ratio, for example 20%, and stick with it for the entire file. That's all well and good, but what if you hit a scene that's just REALLY hard to compress, and/or loses a LOT of quality in the process?

Then you use variable compression ratio, meaning that it targets a specific size, but in boring slow-moving scenes it cranks up the compression, and in fast intense scenes it lowers it.

Overall, variable is going to give you better quality...

well it actualy like tells you on dvd2ones website, constant ratio should be used for "movie only" discs therefor cause the file size is much smaller than a full disc it can use the same compression therefor the movie is better quality, use varible when doin a full disk as it is supposed to be better quality in that mode.
this is taken from there site:

    Select the Compression Mode:
Variable Ratio ('old' engine, as found in DVD2one V1.0 and V1.1). Recommended for Full Disk Copy mode.
Constant Ratio ('new' engine, introduced in DVD2one V1.2). Recommended for Movie-only mode, especially for long movies (2 1/2 hours and more).
