  1. I have just been making an 'off-site backup' of the Stones, Bridges to Babylon.

Usually I use SmartRipper, checking for encryption key every VOB. With this DVD, the encryption key couldn't be determined for the second VOB, it just kept on trying to determine it.

So... I used DVD Decrypter to see what it did, and it got the same result (viz - couldn't determine the key) but just kept on looking in the next VOB and just used that key, which of course, was the same as the first key...

BTW - has anyone actually seen a DVD where they have used different keys on different VOBs ?

Anyway - to cut a very long story to just a long story, the DVD Decrpter rip, included the Warner Bros logo, as well as the actual movie. Deviously, the DVD doesn't have any sound track for that part, so when you use DVD2AVI to create a project and extract to WAV the created WAV doesn't include the 'silence' of the Warner Bros logo, and so when encoding, you get a massive out of sync issue.

Had me very perplexed for a while until I worked out what was going on.

I'd only just started using tooLAME, and thought it might be related to that, but no.

Anyway - I used SmartRipper, configured to only determine the key once, and ripped again. SR didn't bother ripping the Warner Bros logo, and so my resultant WAV was all nicely in sync.

Also, SR produces a nice txt file, with the chapter points (frames) which is really useful when using TSCV as a front end to VCDImager.

  2. Good point Baldrick - It is definitely a "DVD Ripping" trap for young players, whose sympton appears as a "Conversion" trap for young players

  3. There are some DVDs that change encryption key between VOBs. There are some that change within a VOB too (read the doom9 ripper comparison).

I figured there must be, just was wondering if anyone had actually come across one. I haven't so far...
