NEW YORK - Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday at a downtown Manhattan residence, and police said drugs may have been a factor. He was 28.

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said Ledger had an appointment for a massage at the Manhattan apartment believed to be his home. The housekeeper who went to let him know the masseuse had arrived found him dead at 3:26 p.m.

A large crowd of paparazzi and gawkers began gathering Tuesday evening outside the building on an upscale block in SoHo, where several police officers guarded the door.

The Australian-born actor was nominated for an Oscar for "Brokeback Mountain," where he met Michelle Williams in 2005. The two had lived in Brooklyn and had a daughter, Matilda, until they split up last year.

He most recently appeared in "I'm Not There," in which he played one of the many incarnations of Bob Dylan -- as did Cate Blanchett, whose performance in that film earned an Oscar nomination Tuesday for best supporting actress.

Ledger was to appear as the Joker this year in "The Dark Knight," a sequel to 2005's "Batman Begins." He's had starring roles in "A Knight's Tale" and "The Patriot," and played the suicidal son of Billy Bob Thornton in "Monster's Ball."

Ledger grew up in Perth, and began doing amateur theater at age 10. At 16, he moved to Sydney to pursue an acting career, quickly landing TV movie roles and guest spots on Australian television.

After several independent films and a starring role in the short-lived Fox TV series "Roar," Ledger moved to Los Angeles and costarred in "10 Things I Hate About You," a teen comedy reworking of "The Taming of the Shrew."

Offers for other teen flicks came his way, but Ledger turned them down, preferring to remain idle than sign on for projects he didn't like.

"It wasn't a hard decision for me," Ledger told the Associated Press in 2001. "It was hard for everyone else around me to understand. Agents were like, 'You're crazy,' my parents were like, 'Come on, you have to eat.'"
Again, WTF is wrong with these people?... they are supposed to have "everything", they are young, wealthy and famous... so?

What is the world coming to?

Spoilt frigging brats. Give me the movie stars of yesteryear anytime, they were real true idols. They had panache, dignity, and more star quality in their little fingers than most of today's young brats will ever have .

Howard then debuted his first radio-movie, “Buttcrack Mountain.” The radio-movie features Pennis and Jack Off – voiced by “Out-of-the-closet Stern” and “Mr.Blackswell,” respectively – who try to keep their homosexual feelings for one another a secret. During “film,” Pennis wondered if stirring food with his member and sleeping in the same tent as Jack Off made him gay. Although Jack Off assures Pennis that they don’t, the two end up having oral sex while James Blunt’s “Beautiful” plays in the background. Following the premiere of “Buttcrack Mountain,” Howard took a number of calls about the piece, all of which were positive.

And hung around bondage clubs getting cigarettes put out on them for fun. Nothing has changed in the industry since it began. Parties, drugs, sex. So what.

It actually looks more and more like an accidental overdose do to extended insomnia.

Doesn't surprise me at all. People die everyday from a number of things. What does surprise me is that for some reason people seem to think that stars can't have problems.

Then again this isn't a current generation thing either. Anyone remember what happened when Marilyn Monroe died

Ohhhh probably the same thing that's wrong with a lot adults that age, I know in my area heroin was huge problem for kids in that age bracket.
The shit hit the fan around after I got out of high school. It was a huge epidemic. I live close to Philly and that was apparently the bigest heroin hub in US at the time. They'd get hooked and have to start selling it to support their habit, you could drive down to Philly and buy a couple hundred dollars worth and sell it here for a couple thousand. I wouldn't doubt many of them went through hundreds of thousands a year. That shit is nasty, once you're hooked you're hooked for life. Usually only takes one time for most people.

Note I haven't read what killed him but likely thats what it was.

Who are you talking about ??

I am refering to the Alec Guinesses, the Lawrence Oliviers, the Cary Grants, the Gregory Pecks, the Randolf Scotts, the John Waynes, the David Nivens, the Kenneth Moores, the Steve McQueens, the Errol Flynns, to name but a few. So which of them were hanging around bondage clubs ? They were stars in the true sense of Hollywood. Apart from Harrison Ford, and maybe a couple others today, who else comes anywhere near to the hero worship status they acheeved ?

I wouldn't say "hero worship", as it's a different time and mentallity between now and the beging of the '50s. For every person stated as being an idol, it wouldn't be hard to find a drug addicted looney from the same era.

There are good stars out there. http://www.dosomething.org/celebsgonegood

What scares me most is Jack Nicholson's statement about the drug Ambien. Gosh, days in and days out, I have been forced to watch those Ambien commercials. Just glad I've never had a need for sleeping pills.

Big pharmas really know how to play on people's psychology to sell their products.

Why those drugs are allowed to innundate the airwaves 24/7 is beyond my comprehension. IMO, they should be banned from television, just like cigarettes.

It's just as much the doctors as it is the pharm companies. I swear these doctors get a kick back from Pfizer if they sell enough scripts

I had one doctor that wanted to put me on 2 anticonvulsants, 2 narcotic pain pills, a nerve pill, and an antidepressant. Needless to say I found a new doctor that prescribed some gabapentin, a healthy diet and vitamin B12 shots, now I'm feeling better now than I have in years

Over here Ambien is called Stilnox, and the stories regarding it's side effects, from simply not being able to wake up, to driving, eating and having sex with stranger all while asleep, make you wonder how it ever got released.

I feel you could have told your first doctor: "Doc, thanks, but no thanks! I've got something much better than your pills. It's VideoHelp.com."

Ambien also causes some people to suffer from memory loss when they wake up. Fast fame & fortune for these hollywood stars and they don't know how to deal with it.

No politics but for the same reason us Americans don't have national health insurance. Medical care is a multi-billion dollar industry.

You know, I've heard that happen to tons of friends and family. Me, that's a completely different story. I've never been prescribed any painkillers or anything stronger than Motrin. I guess they look at me and think I can take it like a man.

I tried to take MS like a man for 10 years, after a while it gets old I guess that's why I've always avoided the doctor. Fear what they will say, and fear of what they want me to take. Until my girlfriend and ex employer made me go a year ago because of some nasty symptoms. If only my state agreed to medical marijuana

Wow.You guys are pretty brutal here.Without all the facts being known, you're ready to assume he did it to himself. What if it was from an interaction between prescribed drugs?

Well, precedent has been set. Name one famous person who died in their 20s of natural causes (murder and car accidents exempted).

Does it really make a difference whether it was because of "illegal" drugs or prescription ones? Anna Nicole Smith immediately comes to mind.

Andy Gibb (just turned 30).Heart infection.

Or Jim Croce (just turned 30).Plane crash.

That's two Death from natural causes for someone that young is pretty rare. But it happens.

Your logic kind of sucks, dude. You're saying that Heath Ledger probably did it to himself because many do.Ever hear of benefit of the doubt,or presumed innocent until proven guilty?
