It should not. People reconfigure their computers all the the time. I removed my CD-R, replaced it with a DVD-R, added a DVD-RW, more memory, and an extra hard drive. My computer still works okay. If you have misgivings, you can always take to a computer technician and have them do it for you.
    Hello.

Just make sure you know whether the drive you are replacing is the master or the slave, or if you are using CABLE SELECT. Cable select means that whether a drive is master or slave depends upon which ribbon cable connector it attached to. If you are not using cable select, most likely the DVD-ROM is the slave.
Then read the instructions with your new drive about how to set the jumpers on the back to the appropriate setting.
Some drives do not work well with and/or the manufacturer does not recommend using cable select, so be sure to check.

  4. you should try to keep the original DVD-ROM for ripping...

as DVD burners are usually locked at 2X ripping...

and you wanna minimize DVD burner wear-and-tear by using the DVD-ROM for ripping
