  1. ...the motherboard.
One of my questions is; what tools are necessary to remove the old cpu & install the new? The only PIII850mhz cpu's I can find (that is cheap enough to justify the upgrade) are the chip only FCPGA.., not the whole PIII 850E 256KB 100MHz SECC2 @$299!!!
I want to utilize the older computer, but I would need to know how to remove/install the FCPGA properly, & etc.

    Thanks

  2. erm, firstly it may not work m8 cos if u r just switching the processor they will prob work at a different fsb

u can buy cheap mothermoards, with a 1 gigHz cpu and onboard sound & graphics for about £50 i think- u can use all the other stuff although make sure u have at least 128 megs of ram, ideally 256 m8 cos that helps things also!
1)Why Not Overclock a little?! speed 4 free!!!!
    2) If your question has anything to do with copying PS2/PC/XBox games, find a more appropriate website

yep, go look at www.pricewatch.com you could get a motherboard/cpu combo really cheap athlon xp 1800 w/ board for $87.

or look at complete systems w/ no operating system on them.

Im sure you can find a better deal than trying to upgrade to a 850mhz.

If you do decide to go this route, the tools you will need are the two things at the end of each one of your arms CPU chips (nowadays) utilize what's called "Zero Insertion Force" or ZIF. There is a small lever on the side of the socket. Just lift up on it. Make sure your new chip is properly oriented in the socket before pulling that lever back down. You're likely to get more of a struggle getting the CPU fan on than you will with the CPU itself.

    May I also recommend www.pricegrabber.com
