I recently tried burning on a 4x dvdr, and at first Alcohol 120% showed that it was going to burn at 4x... then all of a sudden the speed dropped to 2x... has this happened to anyone? If there's a way to correct this, please let me know! The Sony is using firmware 2.0f and the media was Meritline 4x...
TIA!

That happened to me after I updated the firmware from the original to 1.0f. The drive never would burn at 4x after that no matter what brand of media I bought. A few weeks after that the drive flat out died.

ahhhh okay...
also, what's the difference in the color of the burn side of dvdr's? does it make a difference in how good something will burn, or what players can read them or anything like that? -
The later Sony firmware releases are known to be very conservative with burn speeds (whether this actually results in better burns or not seems to be unknown). Many people have seen burn speeds drop in the 2.0x releases. I have a DRU-500AX so I can't go below 2.0c anyway. So I'm sticking with 2.0f and hoping that I'm getting more reliable discs in exchange for the lower speeds.

well if buring at 2x proves to yield more consistent burns than 4x, I take it!

Yeps, it's the media.
My Princo -R 4x were written in 15 minutes, even on-the-fly.
But the OptoDisc -R 4x dropped speed at 50% and it took 21 minutes to finish the disc.
Nonetheless, the OptoDisc's are by far better than the Princo's.Sony DRU-500A v1.0d

I just bought a 50pk of Verbatim DataLife plus 4x -r's listed here. https://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia.php?selectmedia=185
It seems like everybody and their brother can get this to work on the 500a (2.0f) but me. Nero (latest version) says it's burning at 4x but it takes a full half hour (or slightly more) for a full disc to burn.
Any ideas? -
try proper ritek 4x they,re excellent ive never had a problem with 2.0f 15 minutes every time and no play back problems
