not new to the DVD -Video creation world, I can burn a DVD in a Windows OS, and Nero using the DVD-Video setting. The DVD plays on any windows PC and any standalone DVD player, but wil not play on my iBook with DVD-Rom only CD-RW drive, OS X 10.2.6, all it does upon insert is boot AppleDVD and throws a "Not Permitted" error. the drive can see the media. Can copy the folder onto the harddrive. AppleDVD has no problem playing the data from the HD. I know it is not in Authoring but some how it is the way the DVD is burned? Any suggestions?

  2. I believe that Apple DVD Player wont play movies on DVD-Rs. Check the icon, it should say DVD R on it.

Forgot to mention the the DVD-Video was burn onto DVD+R and DVD+RW. Also i can have AppleDVD closed and when i close the tray, it loads AppleDVD and nothing else, i hit play, that when the "Not Permitted" error appears.

What icon are you referring to? I am across platform person, but not a regular MAC user unlike my friend.

Correction, the apple dvd player will play dvd-r disks. It doesnt matter if its titled DVD-R or DVD R as long as its a DVDr media.

Per the 1st poster, I suspect that its got to do with the actual structure of the dvd when burning it with nero

Typically, apple dvd player, and most any player at that, prefers to see a disk like this

DVD_NAME (the title of the disk that shows up when it mounts to yoru desktop)
-------AUDIO_TS (one of the folders within the disk)
-------VIDEO_TS (another folder within the disk)
------------VIDEO_TS.IFO etc (files that are the dvd video data in the VIDEO_TS fodler)

When you open up apple dvd player and you get the error, just click ok, then go to FILE, OPEN and then actually choose the VIDEO_TS folder thats contained within the DVD. (scroll all the way to the left on the browse window, and you will see your dvd in the listing with your HD(s). click on it, then go to the VIDEO_TS fodler, then click OK, or select.

If you get an error then, its something wrong with the VIDEO_TS folder's files.

To verify, quit apple dvd player, open the DVD by double clicking on the icon on the desktop, and OPTION - DRAG or COPY / PASTE the VIDEO_TS folder to your desktop.

Then, once its complete copying, eject the dvd (IMPORTANT SO THAT WHEN YOU OPEN DVD PLAYER AGAIN IT WONT TRY TO PLAY THE DVD), open apple dvd player then go FILE OPEN on the VIDEO_TS fodler you have on the desktop.

if that plays, there is some error on the burning with NERO.

    Best of luck

I've seen this before. If I remember correctly, it's because the Nero burn had JOLIET selected, and the Joliet messed up the system. Not sure, as it's been some time, but I think that was it.

Thats the problem!!!!!!!! DVD+R is not natively supported by the Mac OS.

If you can mount it, then just copy the VIDEO TS folder over to your HD.

You will then need to reburn it to a DVD-R if you ever want to play it on your mac from the disk.

I can copy the folder to the HD and AppleDVD will play the VIDEO_TS folder option. but AppleDVD only allowing DVD-R and DVD-RW does not suprise me with propriety software. Will also research the Joilet flag, do not remeber if 5.5.10.42 was turned on or not, already. Thanks for all the indicators

DVD-R and DVD-RW are currently the only supported media on the Mac OS.

Dual drives +/- and + drives alone will work, but via a third party software such as Toast Titanium to actually be albe to use the drive.

The then burned dvd+r/w disks "may" work. You are lucky that it even mounted the disk. Most times it wont.

with 10.3 coming out soon, id be suprised if it didnt support dvd+r, but then whats the reason to (you can do the same thing with a -r disk)

Isn't a -R and a +R, once burned properly as a DVD-Video, cross-platform? I thought the -R and +R differences are only related to burning, not to playback. I mean, if the Apple OS had a problem with the MEDIA being +R, even after being burned, it shouldn't have let him use it as a data disk and copy the VIDEO_TS folder to the hard drive.

Im just speaking from personal expereince. I had a +R/W drive I was running from a firewire enclosure with toast.

burns would work, but i could never get any one to mount on my mac.
I switched media a couple of times, and only randomly would i ever get one to mount.

I talked with an "apple helper" on apple.com forum and he said that its not supported by the OS and he was surprised i even got one to ever mount.

all in all, i agree. If it mount and he has a folder i would think it would work! Odd isnt it.

the fact that it will not play the +R/W media is a limitation of the optical drive itself and NOT the Mac OS. Using an external sony DVD±RW drive, we have been able to get DVD-Video to play off a +R optical disc using the Apple DVD Player. Agreed, it is weird how the data can be copied off of the disc, but not played in the DVD player.

Another solution would be to attempt to use VLC to playback the movie, as it supports direct DVD input.

How is that possibel that the opticale drive can see and transfer the media as a data DVD , and boot AppleDVD program but quicks. My Windows experience tells me that AppleDVD has recogonised the DVD-Video in a proper structure. Don't you just love limitations?

Had forgotten abour VLC. that lead me to a working solution. VLC did play the Nero burn "DVD-Video" from the dvd. I later tried/ reburned the same VIDEO_TS folder using ISO/UDF 1.02 with the VIDEO_TS folder. AppleDVD 3.0 booted up and "played it from start to finish wihtou a hitch. Can't explain why AppleDVD 3.0 likes UDF 1.02 format and not the so called "DVD-Video template"
