I desperately need to know if there is any way to convert or capture streaming ASX files. I need to make a video for a presentation about the Attack on America and all the video/audio footage is streaming. Please help. Thanks.

  2. First thing is do you have the files on your pc already? If you do than just use TMPGenc or VirtualDub. ASX as I understan is nothing more than an ASF file and both programs that I mentioned can open ASF files. Though you will need either one of the old VirtualDub releases.

  3. In essence, ASX files are shortcuts/pointers to ASF files, but unfortunately, ASF files stream under a really irritating protocol that's addressed like mms://file instead of http://file. This means that the only way to get at it is through Windows Media Player (in theory), because it blocks access from IE and Netscape and such. The way around it consists of a program called ASF Recorder, which can be retrieved at http://non-standard.net/asf/. It emulates Media Player so that you can download the file to your hard drive. From there, you need to get an older version of VirtualDub (1.3c) from the Tools section here at VCDhelp (when it still handled ASF).

I can't gurantee it will work directly from there. If VirtualDub 1.3 gives you an error when you try to open the file, I'd suggest getting ASF Cut (also from the Tools section) and running the file through there... It may screw up the video, but it will allow VirtualDub to extract the audio. Then, you can instruct Tsunami to use the original ASF for video and the WAV you extracted for the audio...

It's kinda complicated, but there are always workarounds... Good luck!

  4. Get StreamBox VCR and the patch available here: (just sign up, it takes one minute and you can use bogus info)

    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/buzzinhornetz2001

And also get URLSnooper and ASFRecorder (all available there)

Then read these instructions and post and questions at this site

After you cap the streams, you can use Vdub v 1.1 to enocde asf's, I have also been able to mpeg encode an asx in TMPG 12a.....

  8. Here is StreamboxVCR:
    http://cool.sj.net.cn/~souxin/software/StreamboxVcrSuite1.zip
    And here is URL Snooper:
    http://cool.sj.net.cn/%7Esouxin/software/URLSnooper-106.zip
Also this small thing is necessary for URL Snooper to work properly
    http://nowok.net/souxin/software/WinPcap.exe
    Install it after URL Snooper.

But StreamboxVCR is better to use for downloading RealVideo, not ASF. The best tools for capturing ASF streams are ASFRecorder
    http://www.mpegx.com/files/video/asfrecorder_v1.1.zip
    and HiNetRecorder:
http://music.hoonnet.com/productdown/HiNetRecorderSetup.exe Read about the last here: http://www.hoonnet.co.kr/english/product_recorder.html
