  1. I have been have trouble backing up old VHS tape's with MMC 8.1 and 8.5 I use a SIMA Copy master to remove macrovision but ATI MMC still say's the signal is copy protected and can only be displayed. I think the problem is that the tape is very old and the color on the tape change's ever so little well ATI think it's macrovision so the warning pop's up.

I was reading another post made by LanEvo7 and he said to fix ati driver's with direct x 9. Just find file named "AVBISurf.ax" then change it to "AVBISurf.bak.ax" well I did what he said and I test it out the lock up's have stopped.

I have test a seen where i get the lock up test 10 time's and one time it lock up but did not give me the warning but this lock up only last two second's before the locks would last ten second's. But I then test it again the clip came out fine. Thank god ATI made a another bug that we can trick the macrovision protection not to work LOL

  3. What OS are you running with? XP or 2000 or 98SE?

  4. I'm running windows 2000. The trick seem's that it's not working any more. I rename the file but when I start ATI MMC it make's a new AVBISurf.ax file. I thiink ATI MMC is makeing log file's. I think if you back up all the file in the ATI Multimedia folder save them all. When you get lock's just replace them all. This trick does work but only the first ten capture's. Well we have the clue now we just need a stable fix

  5. The site where i got the trick off of said that it might hinder some MMC features. I think it will be better if you use a 3rd party capture program like virtual dub. Thats all I've used and it works perfectly. Evidently ATi still has some driver issues to smooth out.

  6. I just tried virtual dub still getting lock up's. They only way I found to make a perfect copy is to use MMC 7.1 and capture at MPEG 1 at 720*480 then encode with TMPG with filters on to clean up the noise work's very good but take's for ever to encode I turn up the filter to 100% and did VBR 2 pass took me five day's to encode

Some one told me that Canopus MPEGPro_EMR and Canopus MPEGPro_MVR can record old VHS tape's back with no problem but there not cheep around $450.00. I'm going back to MMC 7.1 I only have three VHS tape's that I must remaster but if you have alot then may be Canopus MPEGPro_EMR and Canopus MPEGPro_MVR might be the best bet http://www.shopharmony.com/ has good price's on the Canopus MPEGPro_EMR and Canopus MPEGPro_MVR one thing there no timer for this capture card and I do not think it will do SVCD only DVD and VCD

There was a crack for ATI macrovision detection.
It did prevent ATI from detecting Macrovision
extra sync pulses, but it didn't prevent the AGC trick
where the Video level goeas WAY up during vertical
    retrace.
In short - ATI would capture but the picture was alternately
light and dark enough to be unusable.

Doesn't seem to be in tools and Doom9 is down.
It's no good though Macrovision has 3 or 4 different
methods and this doesn't get them all.

  10. I saw in a thread (of course I lost the thread location) that someone else had a different MACROVISION fix (I have the one from DOOM9 that is now back up again) that turned off the alternating light and dark bands. I could not find the file our download it.

My suggestion (hopefully people will not think this is pirate stuff) is that if you have the original video (you own it) that via the FAIR USE law, you can convert the video into any format (DVD, AVI, etc.) you wish to watch.

So go to the library and get the video on DVD and rip the video without macrovision. Then do the processing suggested by all the guides here.

  11. The stuff im backing up is old VHS tape's from the 80's alot of cartoon's like the orbot's and I bought some JEM for my sister to remaster there the real tape's but one is a bootleg I got ripped of on ebay but I also have the real VHS tape's so it's also a back up now lol. So shop smart on ebay. I have only been ripped off two time's on ebay most of the time buying old stuff from the 80's.

  13. Just one small thing I made one small mistake when I was capturing I set my VCR to PAL-N and the tuner to PAL-N but my ATI AIW record the capture as NTSC so I could not edit the file right MPEG2VCR and TMPG could not edit. IF I played back the file with PowerVCR or ATI software or windows media player the sound is fine. I then encod the video again with TMPG ever thing is fine. But if I set the ATI AIW to record as PAL ever thing would be fine but I would have a PAL MPEG 2 file but I can edit it fine. When ATI AIW capture a pal signal and convert's it on the file TMPG said it was 704*480. It might have just been this capture that had a bug in the MPEG 2 file. It's happen one time with a Dazzle 2 MPEg SVCD file I could not edit with MPEG2VCR had to use TMPG. Again these problem are very small no big deal
