Whenever I take screenshots (of movies) with the "printscreen" key, XP does something I can't really describe but it wont let me paste that screenshot in ms paint. Does anyone else get this problem?

I use PowerDVD4, it has a snap shot option.

I always thought there was a difference between how media files are rendered to the display, and how all other graphics are rendered to the display, which would explain the times I've tried to do a "print screen" and seen my media player with a black box in it.

unfortunately, I'm a tech geek, but I'm not THAT big a tech geek, so I can't explain in better detail.

You get the odd screen because the video is not in the same location in the video buffer as the rest of the desktop....


Most media players take advantage of hardware accelerated colorspace conversions ( DVD's are generally displayed in YUY2 color space ). The video card allocates space for the video and then "overlays" that into the video signal.

So when you take a simple snapshot of the desktop.... the video is not there.

As to Snowmoons suggestion, I have read that if you turn off "Hardware Acceleration" in Control Panel>System>Performance>Graphics, you will be able to use Clipboard.
I have, on occasion, used Clipboard, gotten the black "overlay"screen, cleared the clipboard and taken another "PrintScreen", and the second time would work.
Try it. If it doesn't, no loss.

I just checked, and I must have set Hardware Acceleration to "0" a long time ago, as I can'r remember doing so.

Check out HyperSnap DX, it captures everything (DirectX, OpenGL, DVD) and never fails. It can also capture DVD images in their native resolution, ie you get the real 720x480 (NTSC) or 720x576 (PAL) image and not the scaled up resolution, like 1024x768, DVD players show you. It's not freeware but there is a trial version available.
