Has good grammar gone out the window on message boards? I'm not talking about an occasional typo (something like htis), but full blown IM-speak. When people are called on their bad grammar, it's always the same replies: "I didn't know this was a classroom!", "I was never very good at english.", "Stop being a nazi!", etc.

My perception is that many treat message boards like chat rooms. They think that shorthand and quick responses are of prime importance. Most of the time, the poster is trying to make a point, but the point is lost or ridiculed due to bad grammar.

    Example:
    "i dont c yur doing
if you do that why not"

I can see giving a little leeway to ESL people, but for the most part, they should know better.

*Just my little rant, after countless times trying to decipher various posts.

I can see your point about some posts not being easy to follow. This forum is, amongst many things, an extremely good reference tool for people who are having problems with their movies, and sometimes people will post extremely good advice on how to fix the problem, but just trying to decipher the advice can be daunting- especially if they are saying to use a particular program but refer to it in a abbreviated form. This can lead to all sorts of confusion, not the least to people how are new to dvd/vcd's but even people who have been there a while.

I've noticed the same thing. It used to bother me, but I've gotten to the point where I don't really care. Like you mentioned, this isn't a live chat, so all those IM type abbreviations aren't really necessary. The advantage to a forum is that the poster is able to evaluate and organize his or her thoughts.

Most adults online will post in proper english, with the exception of the foreign people. Anyway, as long as I can understand what the person is trying to say, I don't really mind anymore. If I really have to struggle to understand a post, I usually just ignore it.

Personally I abhor this lazy method of typing.
Yes, I understand it's use in mobile phone communication but there is absolutely no place for it anywhere else.
For me poor spelling and bad grammar is perfectly acceptable, I don't judge anyone for their lack of ability on a forum such as this.

Like others, if I have to struggle to read it I will mostly likely ignore it. Unless I can tell that English is not your first language, and then I try a little harder. If IM speak is all you use, you can most likely forget an answer from me.
Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?

  7. For a joke, I used IM speak in a paper for one of my classes...
The instructor thought it was amussing, but still corrected every word.

  8. I'm also agrivated by shorthand phrases but does it really occur that much here?

I post at a football site and some of those dude must have thought that elementry school was optional.

Almost everyone here seems pretty adept and respectful compared to other boards.

BTY, I have pretty crappy spelling and work from a slow connection so I skip the spell check.
