I am wondering as Im not sure if divx and avi are the same thing? If I take a avi file to convert to SVCD do I have to convert the audio to wav before I encode using TMPGEnc? Video is mpeg 4 and audio is mpeg 3 , my dvd player plays mp3's but i suppose it wouldnt be compliant with being a svcd? I am probably answering some of my questions myself lol .
It's getting complicate for this newbie![]()
Any input appreciated!

To use an analogy, AVI is like a car and DivX is like a Honda Civic. And if TMPGEnc will accept the video and the encoded file will play it in synch with converting the audio, then you do not have to convert. Hope this helps.
Hello. -
Thanks for the reply,
I just split the avi into 2 parts, going to keep it in PAL format and make it a 2 part scvd. My worry is that the vid is mpeg 4 and the audio is mpeg 3 according to avicodec. I assume mpeg 3 is like mp3? but that in converting to scvd which is mpeg 2 the audio wont convert properly. Can you tell Im new to this? lol So im sitting here thinking I should convert the audio parts to wav first then encode? I have virtualdub too.I will try that.
But thanks for your reply again! -
Avi is simply a wrapper format. Many forms of video and audio encoding can be contained within the avi wrapper format. Divx is just one such codec that is commonly (always?) found within an avi wrapper.
many divx's posted on the net use mp3 audio. Open your avi (divx) in virtualdub, if it gives a warning about it containing VBR audio, the TmpGenc will have problelms converting it to mp2 correctly. There are plenty of forum threads on how to fix this problem by converting it to a wav file first.
If vdub does not give a VBR audio warning, Tmpgenc will most likley convert it fine, though nothing is guaranteed. Audio sync problems keep coming back to haunt even the most experienced encoders.
Hope this Helps -
If TMPG accepts your audio it will convert it properly as long as it is not a VBR audio. The real question is whether or not your standalone DVD player will be able to play the svcd format.

Mad my mom a music download freak and now she wants to copy dvd lol my fault ..also my fault my dad's a star trek freak! Files encoded fast with tmpgenc frame serving with virtual dub. But dangit the resulting 2 mpegs ended up being too big for 80 min cd-r's!!!!! Back to the chopping block. At least they played good and apparently no audio problems. Now I'm checking out dvd copying programs since parents have a dvd burner but the installed program wont copy or burn? protected disks. Will have to learn my self then teach my mom how to do dvds. Dad has all the ST movies, ST TNG and is getting all of St DS9 sets............
But thanks for your replies and suggestions to this newbie it is much appreciated
