What is the best method/program/software to capture stills from a DVD and AVI, that I might use to create a DVD cover? I have produced a couple of DVDs from “home movies” and would like to package them up with covers and inserts, so as to send to friends and relatives (ie: to give that “professional” touch).

PowerDVD has still capture built in - it's a little camera icon on the control panel. That's what I use to cap frames from dvds or mpeg files.
for an avi file, I would open it with VirtualDub, find the frame you want, and use Copy Frame To Clipboard - then you open up a graphics program and paste it into a new file.- housepig
