Theres allready possible to buy a settop dvd player who also plays divx..
Kiss DP-450, you can read about it here:
http://www.kissdvd.com/main.htm -
But Divx looks like crap. I think I'll stick with my DVDs.
-
DivX will look as good as you want. If you encode at 1000Kbps with MP3 audio 192Kbps, you will barely notice any difference with the original DVD, and you'll be able to fit 4-5 DivX movies into a single DVD.
Currently you can play DivX (and Xvid) with the Kiss DP-450 (http://www.kissdvd.com) and the Woxter XDiv500 (http://www.woxter.com/woxter/home_woxter_sp.html, but look in the Spanish site, the English site doesn't have information of this model). -

My cousin does he put 3 divx on 1 dvd i could not tell on his 36 inch but then we watched on his 65 inch WS and the quaility was quite poor..

I have the Kiss DP-450, and the quality is excellent
. I encode to DivX doing two pass at a bitrate of 800 to 1000 Kbps; with these parameters I can fit 4 or 5 movies into a DVD. You can't tell the difference with the original. The only downside is that you can't fast forward or backward (but you can jump by time).
You can also use Xvid that produces less macroblocks and usually better details. But this is like MP3, many people will say that MP3 192 Kbps sound quality is awful and they'll never go under 256 Kbps, while for most people there is no real difference in sound quality (except if you use bad encoders, of course). -
The PS2 has a "homebrew" divx player and it plays fine but it can only read MODE2 burned disc. Divx on dvd-r? never tried.

I have the Elta 8882. It worked perfectly straight out of the box. All my films I encode are DivX 5.03 2 pass with AC3 sound encoded between 1300-1700kb and it is very hard to see the difference between them and a DVD. It doesn't support DivX3 Low and High motion yet but that is coming soon apparently. Of all the films from the internet, most are the DivX 3 codec so you just re-encode them with the right codec. It remains to be seen if the big boys (Sony etc...) wil bring one out. The Elta is a great player though.

The old codec was, but it's been completely redone with original code...so they say.

Can you add chapters to a Divx? Or would you just have to fast forward to where you want?
-
for chapters you may have to cut the divx file into each section yourself but im not sure, you cant ff or fr a divx on the kiss dp450 but you can time search.
-
For anyone who doesn't have a standalone DivX player yet, it may be worthwhile to wait until DivX Networks actually badges particular players as "DivX Certified" before jumping in.
The DivX Certification program was recently announced and as of yet, there are NO players that mean certification standards...

I read on Doom 9 that DIVX has certified ESS,the chipset maker. They report players with the ESS chipset should appear in the second half of 2003. ESS chipsets led the way in hackable DVD players,Apex-etc.
