I recently aquired a Panasonic DMR-E30 recorder. I want to make some backups of my DVD's on to DVD-R. Is this a simple thing to do? Are there any tricks, or is it just straight recording? Any help would be appreciated. I have recorded Tape to DVD-R and it was relatively easy. Thanks.

  2. If you're talking about commercial DVDs then the answer is you cannot do this, by and large. There are a *very* few commercial DVDs which are not encrypted or protected by RCE, and these you can copy.

With an internal DVD burner in a computer, you can rip the files to your hard drive with many different programs which will decrypt and/or remove the RCE protection. Then the files can be easily backed up (well, easily depending upon how long the DVD is, but that's a whole other story).

If you're talking about DVDs you've created, you simply plug the DVD inputs into your recorder just like any other video source -- because they are not protected they will copy just fine.

  3. You will need to get some type of cgms removal device, feed your dvd out to it, output from that into dmr-e30 input. Or if you get a dvd player that removes cgms, you can output directly from that to your dmr-e30. Search these message boards for cgms removal. Also, you can go to http://www.thewholewideweb.com/forum/default.asp?CAT_ID=7 this forum is for Panasonic dmr-hs2 users but many of the things talked about there also apply to the e-30.
