Just out of curiosity, what would you use a RAM drive for?

  3. Communication with your RAM is normally WAY faster than it is between your CPU and hard drive. I tried it and saw absolutely no change in encoding time when saving to the RAM drive. But I fear my test was flawed. I fogot my old compuer set up only had a 66MHZ FSB and my hard drive is ATA-66. So, I'll try it after I fininsh my upgrade. I also forgot I had a DIN sized keyboard connector and my motherboard (new) is P/S 2.

  4. i doubt your encoding time would change significantly if you had 120gb ram drive.. encoding is mostly reliant on your cpu.

True, as I just quadrupled that too. But there is also an enormous amount of I/O to the hard drive creating files. I figured I'd try to save it to DDR266 RAM instead of an ATA-100 (now) drive....

you would (should) need double the memory of the ram drive for it to work best -- which counts out a lot of use for dvd as most people dont have 8gig + of memory (or even 4gig) ..

I installed the software from the link you provided and setup a 64MB RAM drive. I have 1024MB of physical RAM, but I haven't been able to set a RAM partition larger than 64MB.

Oh well. I've been using the drive as my internet cache, because I can't think of anything else that would benefit from the speed. I wanted to try and install WC3, but I can't make the partition large enough.

Any other ideas on how I could use 64MB or supah fast virtual disk space?
