I have an AverDVD Ezmaker capture card using Dazzle DVD Complete software. Now I've read the usually 18mins of capture will equal about 4gig AVI. I end up with an 18gig (1min=1gig) AVI. Why is this? Am I doing something wrong or is it the card?

If your file is that large, then your audio and video AVI are uncompressed. If you want to use some type of compression, then use one that is lossless. Look at some other posts and you'll be able to find the ones that are lossless.
I've found that I get better results with the uncompressed AVI, but depending on your machine and your needs, your results may vary. -
depending on your capture software and your configuration, you need to select what kind of compression you want to use.
uncompressed avi is as good as it gets (it's uncompressed, so you're not losing any data) but yeah, it's big. Huffyuv codec is about a 2:1 compression, so it's about 450Mb per minute (about 26Gb per hour).
DV codec is smaller, about 13-14Gb per hour.
I've got that same card, I capture to Huffyuv avi, then use TMPGenc to encode to dvd mpeg. I don't capture direct to mpeg unless it's material where maximum quality is not an issue, because I find that going straight to mpeg with this card lacks sharpness and definition over capturing to avi.
I use iuVCR to capture, but VirtualVCR is pretty good as well. Don't know about the Dazzle software, but from everything I've heard it's not too good, so you might want to try some other applications.- housepig

Welcome to the capture world!
1min=1Gig is nothing. I capture uncompressed avi 1min=2Gig full res.
Only way to get image closest to original quality. Takes unbelieveable
amount of time. If you wanna be god in making DVDs better start early,
very early.)) heh -

Oh yeah?
I tried to use this huffy codec. It sux badly. After 1h or spontanious time
it makes some frames crap. It'd work perfect but destroys image!
I tried it on different comps and OS. It happens only in 740x480.
Then if you take any Mpeg2 capture soft f.ex. WinDVR it will deinterlace
and alter original image. The simplest way - capture uncompressed.
All codecs have bugs and flaws so u minimize risk. Problem is the space.
I have 4 80Gb stripped array system so I dont worry.At work 2x250GB WD
heh. I know It takes time but I have just TV tuner and have not seen
good hardware encoder - all good 1s are super expensive and won't capure protected material.
I know all what mr Cecilio said so I know what I'm talking about.
Just try to make DVD with the same quality as from the store.
You will find out your hardware is weak and quality sux unless you
go with the hard way. -

The 352x480 4.0 MB/s MPEG2 captures look perfect. If capturing from satellite, I use 720x480 (as DTV is 544x480). There's nothing inferior about my systems. My specs are in my profile.
Again, it's your system. Do what you want.I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored. -
Just to add few comments. Comparing material captured by Mpeg2 soft
and that compressed from avi-uncompressed to Mpeg2 quality of avi-mpg
is 30-40% better. Maybe you don't see it on TV but on monitor u do.
Try to see a text in your movies - if its perfect shape you have a good capture.
I can capture TV with results of original looseles quality.
Maybe something wrong with my system but huffy codec fails here.
P43.06 1.5GbDDR400 XP-Pro. DVD quality is always 720x480.
All VOBS are that size (NTSC).
I need cheaper and better that current ones Mpeg2 encoder.
Dont wanna spend a downpayment for a car, do ya?
Just show some pics of your caps and then brag. -

I'm definitely not going to capture uncomressed AVIs. Maybe in the future when we have 200Ghz CPUs and 500 Terrabyte hard drives, this might be fast and convenient. Until then I'll stick with the ease and quality of DV.Laserdiscs are cool, but laserdiscs on DVD-Rs are cooler. -

just wondering....is there a difference between huffyuv and huffy? or is huffy just short for huffyuv? i cant find huffy in the tools section but huffyuv is there.

Since both seem to be using at least 544 by 480 wouldn't it make more sense to use a higher resolution rather than a lower resolution to capture??
