I am not sure if I have missed something, but according to my knowledge, recorable DVD media has a maximum capacity of 4.7 GB. (....okay, I know: should be 4.34 GB)

I now found out that you can but for DVD-RAM already 5.2 GB media.
    See this link:

It's German, but I assume that if we can have DVD-RAm as 5.2 GB, it will be a matter of time before we get DVD-R as 5.2 GB available......did any-one already found media with this increased capacity?

    Hold on thar little filly--

The 5.2GB discs you're quoting are of the Double-Sided variety, they are version 1.0 of the DVD-RAM spec and are companions to the 2.6GB Single-Sided.
The DVD-RAM spec has since been updated to v2.0, where you can get up to 4.7GB Single-Sided and 9.4 Double-Sided (often called "10"GB by marketing) disc just like all the other formats.

This isn't the Holy Grail that you were seeking.

  4. I'm curious...

Why did Panasonic stop at 4.7GB? What would be the disadvantage of them making single side/single layer 5.2GB or higher discs? It can't be compatibility coz most DVD-ROMs/Players can't read DVD-RAM.

Is it a limitation of the red laser? I seem to recall reading an article about doubling the capacity of DVDs without the need to use blue laser.

Would it costs more to produce discs over 4.7GB? That's probably it.
