  1. Isn't that OEM, no software, no cables, etc. Anyway, not the best choice of writers according to opinions on the board.

  2. The price is listed as follows, not $113.00

    SKU#: 18030059
    Reg. Price: US$189.00
    Our Price: US$121.00
    You save: US$68.00

Still a good price. I think most of us have purchased burning software long ago so there is no reason to get software with a new drive, at least not for me.

the NEC burner is perfectly acceptable if you burn decent media in it. My girlfriend so far has burnt a few Memorex +r's, an Optodisc -RW, 5 TDK -R's, and 4 Ritek G04 -R's. All wrote fine, and played back fine in all of my players. Suprising about the Optodisc too, not the best type of media. Problem is though, if you put crap media into a drive, no matter how good the drive is, the disc might have some issues. Avoid dirtcheap media (Unless its a great brand on sale) and the drive is great. I'm willing to bet a lot of people using this drive and complaining are using some type of hacked Firmware and cheap media, or they simply got unlucky and got a defective drive, cause as I'm sure all of us know through at least 1 experience, not every piece of hardware manufactured will work.

As for the OEM/barebones issue...well, all the tools necesary for DVD backups are free. DVD Shrink, and DVD Decrypter are all that I've needed in 6 months, take up minimal hard drive space and always get the job done quickly and correctly. Img Tool also helps for creating images, but thats only necesary when you take a DVD-9 and have to shrink or rip it, then create the ISO to burn in DVD Decrypter.

It IS a very good drive!!

I've learned to use better media that not only burns and plays well for a week or so but keeps playing well in 6 months+.

For a guy as myself who doesn't have many DVDs to backup, it's well worth spending extra 50 cents or so per disk on quality DVD media.

And.... for the guys who claim having 200+ original DVDs.... face it - you've spent so much money on the originals, then don't complain you got no money for quality blanks

  5. Without speaking about the drive I ONLY buy OEM. WTF do I need a pretty box or useless 3rd party software for. It's almost always an SE/crippleware verison. And as others have mentioned the freeware tools (DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, IFOEdit, etc) actually do a better job!

Most OEM products are still under the standard warrenty.

  6. I have the Cendyne which is the same as the NEC ND1300A firmware 1.05. However I paid $200 for it earlier this year. Burns all the crap and good stuff I run through it; Princo, Counterfeit Maxell, TDK, Ritek GO3......
