  1. OK, let's see if we have any really gurus out there.

I have created several miniDVD using ATI to capture mpeg2 (actually, captures ati vcr file but converts to mpeg2) at 352x480x2400.

I then use TMPGEnc DVD Author to remove commercials, create menu, and create miniDVD files.

I use Nero to burn the files to a CD as a data disk.

I can only get 700MB on the disk. I understand that I can use mode2 to get 800MB. I need that 100MB. I found a program, Mode2CDMaker, that will create an ISO image in mode2 that nero burns. However, when this program converts a file for mode2 use, it renames it with a .DAT extension. This trashes it for miniDVD.

The 700MB or less miniDVDs I created play well on my Mintek 1600. Even the renamed, compressed, mode2 files play as unauthored mpeg files. However, I wish to burn a miniDVD with the main .VOB file compressed and written as mode2.

Any suggestions. I have been through nero and all its settings, but have not found the magic yet. Please help.

Mode 2 burns without the data check bits used by mode 1,even if there was a burning software that would let you burn it probably wouldn't play.
I've tried using 99min.CDR's for miniDVD but burning software that supports overburning will only recognize them as 700MB disks in data mode, they will burn at 990MB's in mode 2.

  3. Well, I used that software that created an ISO in mode 2 and although it did not see it as a miniDVD (because all files were appended with .DAT) it did see them as unauthored files, including the VOB files, which it played (because my Mintek 1600 plays both miniDVD and unauthored mpegs). So, I am of the opinion that it will read it. However, won't know for sure until I am successful at writing one with the correct file extenstions.

    Any other thoughts?

You're treading on very thin ice. Don't do it. You might be successful in getting a mode2 disc made, but it may not be readable for long.

SVCD/CVD/VCD discs usually have the major movies as tracks in mode2. Thus not having as much error correction. That isn't so bad with audio or video files as they are resilient to errors, but as you probably already know it is disastrous with std. data files.
Ok, you say, "it's just the vob files"...
    But wait,
DVDs (and miniDVD's by extension) have their files as mode1, partly because the IFO's should not get messed up or you're out of luck. 1 reason why they include a BUP file just in case.
SVCD/CVD/VCD discs also have their "file system" part of the disc as mode1 (or more acurately mode2form1) mainly because this is the part that can't get messed up.
So, if you make the "filesystem" of the miniDVD on mode2, it could get messed up with quite minor errors, and that would make the pointers to the VOB's etc NO GOOD.

I say, go back to your ".VCR" files and re-encode to mpeg2 at a slightly lower bitrate.

Good luck, and let us know what happens
