I am using SF VideoFactory 2 for editing, TMPGEnc for encoding AVI to MPEG-2, and Ulead MovieFactory for Authoring, adding menus and burning.
Is it best to use TMPGEnc to convert to MPEG-2 before I starting editing (via VF2), or should I edit in AVI, save my VF2 edited file in AVI, and then encode in MPEG-2 before the authoring/burn process. Does it make a difference?
Thanks.

Some people will say different things, and only experimentation will give you the true answer you seek.
However, I think that most people find that editing an AVI is easier and you will run into less issues with out of sync A/V by editing your original capture(AVI).
Also, I think there are more/better editing tools for AVI than there are for MPEG-2. -
Yep, edit tha AVI every time. Editing any sort of mpeg can be a hit and miss affair, depending on the SW. Avi editing is usually pretty reliable.

agreed... editing mpeg-2 can be a recipe for disaster.
If you're editing together something where audio sync isn't an issue, it might be okay to edit mpeg-2, but I'd edit in avi as much as possible.- housepig
