Ok in the process of backing up some of my favourite movies.

I would like maximum quality, by stripping uneeded extras, and disable 'special features' button on dvd menu

Would this be the correct order of doing things:

DVD decryptor + VOB blanker + PGCedit + DVD rebuilder + IMGtool + Burn with Nero ???

    ???
    Thanks in advance.

DVDFab HD Decrypter -> VobBlanker -> PGCEdit -> DVD Rebuilder -> Imgburn

There is no place for Nero is a DVD related workflow.

You could simplify it further by doing a movie only rip in DVDFAB HD Decrypter, then burning with Imgburn, or by using DVD Rebuilder Pro to reauthor instead of VobBlanker/PGCEdit.
    Read my blog here.

What is the advantage of using VobBlanker before PgcEdit since you can replace anything in PgcEdit with a blank cell?

  5. Yeah, I was going to suggest reversing the PGCEdit/VobBlanker steps as well. You can blank them and then make the DVD jump over some of the blanked stuff if, for example, you want to start at the menu. You can also remove unused PGCs and do a host of other things (fix menu buttons so you can't click on removed stuff, change subtitle colors, etc.). You can do some of the same things in VobBlanker (including the blanking), but I like to do as much as I can in PGCEdit before going next to VobBlanker.

Add another vote for leaving Nero completely out of the equation.

I wish I understood the various functionalities of PGCEdit better. I use it for exactly what you mention; blank unnecessary stuff and update the menus i.e. removing the links to the blanked stuff. Then I use FixVTS to clean the modified VOB's. Would it be more appopriate to use VobBlanker to do that?

Yeah, they'll do pretty much the same thing as far as the "cleanup" goes, except, as I understand it, VobBlanker does it better. So, if at some point you'll be processing everything through VobBlanker, then the FixVTS step isn't necessary.

PGCedit doesn't actually remove unwanted cells, it just skips them. If the intention is to reduce overall file size then VobBlanker is better.

  9. Rereading what I wrote originally, you're right; it doesn't actually remove them, but blanks them and kills playback. But if the DVD is eventually going to be processed by VobBlanker anyway, then the net effect is to shrink the size. If you open the DVD in VobBlanker after having killed playback and blanked in PGCEdit, the file size as shown in VobBlanker has already shrunk. It just has to be processed to complete the procedure.

Also, if you delete the last VTS, or delete unused PGCs, then they really are removed. You sometimes have to be careful about references to the stuff you delete, and it's possible to completely mess up the DVD if you're not careful, but that's another important use for PGCEdit.

That is why I used Fix VTS, but thanks to the wise people on this site, I understand that I should use VobBlanker instead from now on.

    Buy a dual layer burner.

    Process:

    DVD Decrypter > ISO read
    DVD Decrytper > ISO write

    1) Any DVD+DVD Decrypter

    2) VOB Blanker

    3) DVD-Rebuilder

    4) IMGBurn

You can skip step 2+4 if you are doing movie only and already have IMGBurn installed as the latest DVD-RB Pro uses IMGBurn as default now, which is another reason to upgrade to the PRO release, apart from free lifetime upgrades unless you wish to donate again its much more powerful than the rarely updated free version of DVD-RB

I use VOB Blanker for episode DVD's to remove the unwanted FBI stuff and various warning copyright logos, plus the unwanted forced trailers or commercials they are now putting on DVDs, so it goes straight to the menu

Also VOB Blanker can do basic cutting which is useful for old straight to DVD from master tapes episode DVDs, like On The Buses that all have the old BBC countdown marker board at the front of every episode

Its also good at getting better player compatability for those badly (cheap) commercially authored DVDs that have various weird DVD structure errors that sometimes DVD Shrink and other software can't handle so refuse to even recognise its a DVD
