  1. I've got a divx file I would like to convert to Mpeg-2 for burning to an svcd. When using tmpgenc you get to choose how big the final file should be thus determining the % of your chosen media.

My question is, how much space do the other files that are required on a svcd take up? Do I encode the file so it takes up 95% of an 80min disc or 99%?

    Thanks!!

  2. tottaly depends on over burning.

I make my files to be around 770MB, I then over burn 700MB CDR's never had a problem, so for me 110%

Keep in mind that writing 'data' to a 700mb CD, you can fit only about 702mb, however writing an SVCD, you can fit just over 800mb on a 700mb (80min) CD. (This is due to fact that SVCD & VCD don't require the error controlling overheads that pure data need).

As a rule of thumb allow 5-10mb for SVCD overheads, so if you keep your MPEG file to around 790 to 795mb (98%) it should always fit.

I'm not sure but I think the percentages that TMPGenc uses may take the overheads into account.

To 'Ejoc': You still have about 30mb to go before over-burn becomes an issue.

In TMPGEnc I use 99%, I never overburn and I've never had a problem. (Well, not a file size problem anyway.)

I think what bunyip is saying is that you aren't "pushing the envelope" (overburning) until you're past 800 MB. In fact, you've been short-changing yourself up to now.

Ya'll realize that none of your suggestions will probably work?

"DivX File" is too vague. Come on...get with the program. Are we talking a 22 minute tv ep or a 90 minute movie? A good rule of thumb is 45 minutes of video/SVCD disk. So a 90 minute movie needs to be about 190% of a 80 minute CDR. When done cut it in 2 (pick a scene change....you have a few MB to play with) and burn it to 2 disks. For a movie over 100 minutes choose 285%, over 150 minutes choose 380%.

For 1/2 hour TV eps choose 45%, and 1 hour eps (typically 42-48 minutes long w/o commercials) choose 95%. Make sure to adjust for 80 min disks versus 74 (anyone still buy those by mistake?).

Be sure to choose the correct aspect ratios to avoid skinny/fat people.

I can see that the way we calculate our bitrates differ. But I think we did answer his question, my reading of it is: how much % wise can I fit on A* CD.

I gather you calculate your bitrate, then cut the movie, where I cut the movie then calculate the bitrate.

So for me, my suggestion does work becuase I do it differently.
