    Hello

Correct me if wrong but aren't the first 3 options all well OVER the $500 price point?

I'd go MATROX any day of the week, but not sure this will help you. What do you plan to do? What kind of source and output? What are your plans? This is the most important question.

These cards are not all that great for DVD output (need software output still, no hardware for MPEG). Either jump to a lower card like an ATI AIW Radeon or jump to a higher card like the Matrox RTX100. If the realtime editing aspect is the most important, then I guess one of these would be fine, but I have a feeling you'll regret it later on.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

  5. I plan to edit video of the kids and make home movies.

I have a Sony DV camcorder, a pc with a 2.8GHz P4, and I plan to put the final result on DVD's. My priorities are: 1. cost (budget of ~$500 for an editing solution), 2. image quality (I've made VCD's and SVCD's and I don't like the quality), and 3. real time editing. I don't care about analog in or out.

I want (or think I want) real time editing for quick viewing as I tweak a particular scene by changing the timing of different video/audio/title tracks relative to each other, or change the properties of a transition. I currently have only a low end ($50 range) editing software package and it takes _forever_ to generate even a short movie.

  7. Why Vegas software over Canopus hardware + Premier? It looks like Vegas provides unlimited video tracks compared to Canopus's three, but I'm not sure what Vegas's support for real time preview on an external monitor means. Do I have to get a special monitor?

no -- preview can be on your pc screen or a second pc monitor but what also is - is that you can preview out of your firewire to a monitor , which means either a monitor w/ firewire in or any firewire to video /firewire convertors (which is included in the package above) ..

  9. If I can preview on my computer's monitor, why would I want another monitor on firewire for preview? (probably a serious newbie question)

I suppose that whether or not a Vegas preview is really real time or not depends on the cpu, amount of memory, whether the transition is 2d or 3d, etc.... With a 2.8Ghz P4 HT cpu, 512MB of memory, will all 2d and some 3d transitions be real time?

Does Vegas support scrolling title tracks?

    scrolling title tracks = yes

yes - all effects are viewed real time - though if you stack a lot of layers - the frame rate may drop - but you would still see everything instead of like in premiere where you would just see a red X untill rendered ..

you would want to view ona external NTSC monitor for serious broadcast or dvd type work as the color and aspect ratio is different than on a PC , though you can simulate NTSC aspect ratio on the vegas preview window (on the PC)

  11. Another newbie question: What about codecs between RaptorRT2+Premier and Vegas 4.0? Which solution provides the best image quality?

I'll have to second that choice. Going with Canopus' latest greatest capture card -apparently compatible with nearly every different kind of video software available, and sporting Sonic Foundry's Vegas 4.0...
For the price it's a no brainer.

Better yet, wait to see if any of Canopus' academic dealers will be offering it. I'm a student, and I'd totally take advantage of the discount.
If you know any college students or professors well enough, I'd recommend you ask them to make the purchase for you. Academic pricing can be much less than retail.

  14. I just bought the acedvio card + vegas but I'm having trouble installing it. After XP detects and configures the new hardware, my SBC (pac bell) dsl service stops working. The SBC folks couldn't figure out the problem even after I removed the card. I ended up having to do a system restore. I notice that XP detects the card and sets up a 1394 LAN as well as some sort of TV/video network connection. Perhaps this is interfering with my LAN card (not really a card, I think its an Intel Pro/100 ve integrated on the motherboard)? My pc is new, a 2.8GHz P4 with an Intel 865 chipset (Dell Dimension 4600.)
