  1. Hi folks,

some days ago I started to try out different formats and conversion methods. I made a MSVCD (with TMPGEnc) from one of my DVDs. Worked fine, but my standalone won't play MSVCD. Next try was converting this to a DVD (ok, I could copy the DVD 1:1, but that isn't what I try... wanna test how quality changes, duration etc).
I converted the MSVCD 2 time, one time with standard settings from TMPGEnc (bitrate: CBR ~4000), the whole movie (110 Mins) needed about 5h to convert to DVD. The quality was poor. Many times are artefacts on the screen... so, not the best solution.
Next try was encoding at highest level with VBR, 2pass etc. It took about 17h to complete. The quality is much better, but still sometimes some artefacts. But there is a bigger problem: The movie hangs short (>1sec) but often. And the other problem is, that my standalone player screws up when the it happens to often.

So, anyone with some ideas whats the problem? I think it's normal when converting a "lower" format up to DVD... but maybe I'm wrong.

    Bye

Does this only occur on your DVD player, or does it also happen with the mpeg output by TmpGenc when played on your PC. If the former (DVD player) it is more likley to be a burning or media issue than problems with encoding. I encode and burn quite a few DVD's. Most play fine but a few stutter and pause, even using the same brand media that works fine for others.

Try a different media brand, or take a look at the DVD players list to see if any other owners of your player have had success with a particular brand.

    Hope this helps

  3. Hi,

the hangs are also on the PC... in WMP, the DVD-Authoring Software, everywhere... so no problem with the player. Worked with the DVD+Rs for "real" DVD movies with no problem.
