hi guys
i have had my Sony DRU-510A DVD±RW Writer for only 10 days and looks like it has packed in already. Im dont know what happened to it but i was using Instand copy at the time and it popped up a error message when it started writing.
The light on writer kept on flashing, so i rebooted my computer, manualing opened the tray using a pin to get my blank dvd out.
My computer doeasnt recognises it, it flashes a few times when the computer boots up and thats all! I have tried reinstalling it , but no success.
Would like to hear from expert members of whats likely to be the fault, before i take it back on Monday. I think i will be asking for a replaced straight away, I hope i am entitled to do that!!

dave, if you bought your drive in the U.S. ..chances are it will say right on the lid of the box "inside" you must send that drive in for repair,...however, I wouldn't even tell the store you purchased it from it's defective..just return it flat out...you get at least 14 days from most retailers to do that. Then simply purchase another drive.
Another thing..never just RESTART your computer when your burner is working..even if it looks like its stopped..that's not smart...and may have screwed it up. Also sounds like it COULD be your system having an issue detecting it..but most likely the burner is now damaged. Just return it,...get a new one..and treat it right. -

When you say re-installed it, HOW, have you un-installed the drive in [Device Manager] and reboot to re-install the drivers to see if maybe that helps? Or have you physically removed the drive and moved it to a different control position?

i removed the drive - gave it 10 mins and reconnected it but windows doeasnt recognise the drive atall, its not showing in the device manager, and that happens when i first rebooted (before i removed it)
-
Did you remove the drive in D/M if there. Shut down the computer UnPlug/discharge remove the drive physically then restart the computer WO drive. Shut down the computer again UnPlug/discharge install the drive physically and start the computer again then see if it shows up.
***Unplug the computer after each step and push the power button with power unplugged each time to discharge.
Ps: If running XP did you try a recovery to before problem?(;-{> Dd

I had to return mine ... it arrived DOA, and Sony asked me to run the following utility before returning it:
The DriveCheck Diagnostic Tool is a quick and easy test that determines if your device is defective or working properly. DriveCheck performs read and write tests on your drive. Within minutes, you will know if the drive passed or failed.

Damn, that must have been how i killed my Liteon 24x, i restarted it while it was burning, becasue my pc locked up. = ( i never got a RMA on it either, so money down the toielt bowl.

@doggiedaddy, yea, that's right...my philosophy is F&*CK the next guy...it's not about the next guy..it's about the fact that Sony has a whacky ass policy and asks to have their drives SENT TO THEM even if they are defective within 30 days..the label inside the box says that.....I say SCREW THAT CRAP...you just purchased your drive and your gonna send it out to get "repaired" LMAO.....BULLSHIT.....not me....you can send your drive in 10 days after purchasing it and let them Guinnea Pig it and return it...but not here.....
also, it isn't even really screwing the next guy because the store is gonna sell it as an open box and with that you get what you pay for..but at least the next person can say..hey, it's defective...hell..maybe through Osmosis the drive will work in someone else's computer...but i'm not about to spend $350 to have to wait WEEKS on end to get my guinnea pig drive repaired.
That's my advice, take it or leave it. -
Actually most MAJOR retail stores, ie staples, best buy, etc. allow you to exchange the merchandise if its defective within 14 days.

ive tried all you said doggiedaddy, the computer has recognised the drive, the light keeps on flashing and thats all. Looks like its going back tomorrow!

I returned my Sony writer back today to CCL Computers Bradford. They were very helpful, was asked whether I want a replaced or refund straight away. They didnt have any sony writers in stock, so as i couldnt wait I opted for a OEM version of the pioneer 105 which was £150 cheaper than the sony one. I know it doeasnt do +dvd's but i think I can live with that, and because it was a lot cheaper I can always opt for a new one a year or so later. i hope this one last for than 10 days!!

the same thing has happened to my sony 510. Same flashing light and everything. I have contacted the place i bought it from so I should be able to get a replacement they are pretty good with customers. It would be interesting to know exactly what has gone wrong with the drive cos the flashing light must be buit in to show a fault.

Hi paul
I bought my second Sony dvdwriter 510A today it lasted a record 2 hours! same problem again. I contacted Sony UK today and they said that they are aware of this problem and it is a hardware fault and will fix if i want to return it to them. Well i will be returning mine to the shop i bought it from tomorrow. So if there any peeps out there thinking of buying one (UK) i would wait until they sort the problem out and if you only just recently purchased this Paul i would ask for a refund and go for another brand or the 500A . -
this is typical of sony. Ya they make some good products but they are always concerned more with the bottom line then their actual products. They probably felt comfortable with the 500A and decided that instead of making it more sturdy they would cut some corners on the new drive and make some extra money. Screw sony I say return it, get your money back anyway possible and get another brand.

I am thinking of the NEC 1300. I can get it from the same place i bought my 510 from Dabs.com and it is £50 cheaper. So you are saying it is sony's fault not dabs so if I go for the NEC I shouldn't have any problems.
