  1. Hi

I have ripped a vob file from a dvd i originaly burned myself as i need to reedit.

Anyway, i want to get the VOB to a format i can open in Final Cut Pro, ideally a mov, but anything will do now.

I have installed ffmpegx as directed by the website, but when i try to encode i get this message in the terminal window:

Encoding started on Fri Jun 13 21:36:20 BST 2003
    usage: movtoy4m -w width -h height -F a:b -a a:b [-s] [-f] [-o ppm/y4m] movie.mov

    example: movtoy4m -w 352 -h 288 -F 25:1 -a 4:3 pal_normal.mov
    example: movtoy4m -w 352 -h 240 -F 30000:1001 -a 16:9 ntsc_wide.mov

**ERROR: [mpeg2enc] Could not read YUV4MPEG2 header: system error (failed read/write)!

Those file names (pan_normal.mov, movtoy4m and movie.mov) were not specified by me

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

I have exactly the same error. Did you find a solution to this problem?

    No. How is that related?

  5. "QT decode" uses it to read VOB files.

What I don't understand is that I don't have this problem if I switch to ffmpeg instead of mpeg2enc (although the result is catastrophic) and that mpeg2enc seems to work fine when used by forty-two.

    Anyway, thanks for your answer.

  7. ffmpegX implements dozens of different processes depending on settings and in/out formats. The ffmpeg codec can decode VOBs by itself, with extremely good results. The mpeg2enc codec is however unable to read mpeg-2 by itself, so four different external decoders have been added and you can choose the one you prefer: mpeg2dec (when "use quicktime to decode" and "use mplayer to decode" are both disabled), Quicktime (when "use quicktime to decode" is selected, need the QT mpeg-2 component), mplayer (when "use mplayer to decode" is selected), and ffmpeg (for .avi or .mpg input).

I get it now. Thanks again. I just need to figure out why the resulting mpeg file is horrible. If only forty-two were to let me access the individual mpeg files, instead of buildng me a complete disc image...
